North London FC winners of the 2017 Toronto SomaliWeek Soccer Tournament

TORONTO (HOL) - The Northern London FC of  London, UK were crowned winners of the 2017 Annual SomaliWeek  Soccer Tournament held at Centennial Park Stadium in Toronto.

The tournament was capped off by a nail-biting thriller between Northern London FC and Minnesota's Midnimo FC. After both sides failed to end the game in 90 minutes, the fate of the winner was decided by a penalty shoot out.

Northern London FC's keeper was able to turn away enough balls to secure his team the championship.

The annual summer tournament held in Toronto hosts teams from across the world. This year, more than 12 teams from Canada, USA and UK; including Ottawa FC, Hilaac FC (Toronto), Midnimo FC (Minnepolis), Kitchener FC, Gala Canada (Toronto), Dixon FC (Toronto), Seif FC (Toronto) and winners Northern London FCvied with each other to hoist the cup.

The tournament is hosted by the Toronto Development Association of Youth (TODAY) and held at Centennial Park Stadium in Etobicoke, Toronto.

The tournament usually invites former Somali soccer legends from the past as well as honourary guests from the community for the closing ceremonies and trophy handout.

Somali Week’ was first held in Toronto back in the early 90’s by a group of Somali sportsmen who fled the civil war, including Somali soccer players Mukhtar Ute, Antar Jenyo and many others.
