Ghana skipper Asamoah Gyan has become the first player to score in six consecutive Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

He scored Ghana’s only goal in the 1-0 win over Mali on Saturday evening which also saw him become Ghana's top scorer in the tournament with eight goals.

Gyan joins Samuel Eto'o who scored in six straight Afcons from 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010.

The Ghanaian skipper, who is also Ghana’s most capped player, scored his first Africa Cup of Nations goal in 2008. He also scored in 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015 and now 2017.

The former Sunderland striker had a dry spell which had lasted 587 days prior to Saturday’s goal against Mali. He last scored on June 14, 2015 ( a brace against Mauritius).

Mali happens to be his favourite victim as it is the only team he has scored against more than once (two goals) at the continental showpiece. The other six teams he has scored are against Guinea, Angola, Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Niger and Algeria.

The national team’s all-time top scorer is just a goal shy of hitting 50 goals for his nation. His first Afcon goal came on January 20, 2008 against Guinea while his first Ghana National Football team goal came back in 2003 in a World Cup qualifier against Somalia.
