Two SNA commanders dead after Al-Shabaab ambush

Mogadishu (HOL) - Fighting between Al-Shabaab and the Somali National Army has claimed the lives of eight soldiers early Sunday in the Lower Shabelle region, including senior army commanders.

Warmahan and Tihsile locals report that members of Al Shabaab ambushed soldiers in the early hours in the morning in a well-coordinated attack. The ensuing firefight went on for several hours with both sides exchanging heavy gunfire.

Deputy Governor of Lower Shabelle Abdifatah Abdulle Yusuf confirmed that two soldiers were among the dead. He said they were killed by a landmine explosion while responding to the ambush call.

"Al-Shabaab militants attacked SNA army bases in Warmahan and Tihsile areas in Lower Shabelle region this morning, then fighting broke out where we lost eight government soldiers including two army commanders, two Al-Shabaab fighters killed and some others injured," Abdalla said.

Al Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack but say that they killed 19 government soldiers and injured scores more.
