In a statement released on his Facebook page, Mr. Osman said that “after consulting many parts of the Somali society including politicians, educators, young constituents, women, business and community leaders as well as traditional elders, I’ve decided to abandon the race for the presidency."

He added that whoever wins the presidency should dedicate himself to sound honest government and to consider the future of the Somali people.

23 candidates remain in the race for Presidency. A debate is scheduled tomorrow between the remaining hopefuls, and Somalia’s bicameral Parliament will elect its new leader on February 8th.
