Deputy PM, Mohamed Omar Arte receiving $360,000 for emergency aid relief. The cheque was presented by Mohamed Osman Jawari and the head of the electoral commission Abdirahman Duale Beyle.
Mogadishu (HOL) - Deputy Prime Minister and head of the National Drought Response Committee Mohamed Omar Arte received $360,000 from Parliament Speaker Mohamed Osman Jawari today.
The money, exactly 50% of the total registration fees will be used for emergency relief for the drought currently gripping Somalia. The gesture was approved by presidential candidates and both Houses of Parliament.
Mr. Arteh thanked all the candidates as well as the bicameral parliament and promised that the funds will go to those who deserve it most.
“I thank MPs from both houses for the role in extending support to the drought-affected victims, I promise that this money will be managed properly,”
Nearly three million people in Somalia are classified as facing emergency food insecurity according to UN Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). At a news briefing on Thursday, a UN spokesperson said that roughly half of the Somali population is in need of assistance.
