Congressional Somali Caucus Statement on Appointment of Ambassador Stephen Schwartz

Thursday, June 30, 2016

Washington – Co-Chairs of the Congressional Somali Caucus, Reps. Keith Ellison (D-MN) and Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN) released the following statement on the appointment of Stephen Schwartz as the new Ambassador to Somalia:

“It is with great pleasure that we extend our congratulations to Mr. Stephen Schwartz, the new Ambassador to Somalia. Mr. Schwartz is the first Ambassador to Somalia since 1991. This is a historic moment for the future of a democratic Somalia and for the future of relations between our two countries.

“This appointment is especially important for Somali-Minnesotans and Somali-Americans in the United States. We embrace their contributions as doctors, lawyers, politicians, and teachers. They have established businesses, museums, and restaurants – some of the best Sambusas in the world are made in Minnesota.

“Mr. Schwartz’s appointment signals the next step in Somalia’s return to stability. We look forward to working with Mr. Schwartz to address the issues the Somali people still face: ensuring the future of a stable, democratic government, protecting the remittances pipeline, and addressing the drought in East Africa. It is time to see Somalia in a new light – not as just a recipient of aid, but as a potential trade and security partner, with enhanced cultural exchanges between the people of Somalia and the United States. The appointment of Ambassador Schwartz will help us make those things a reality.

“Finally, we want to wish all Somali-Americans and the people of Somalia Happy Somali Independence day week. Somalia Hanoolaato!
