Ergogan Hospital former Digfeer, restoring Somali’s Healthcare System

Erdogan Hospital, named after the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has been fully reconstructed and refurbished by the Turkish government. The hospital is formerly known as Digfeer.

The hospital has won acclaim locally for a friendly policy of waivering bills accrued to patients seeking treatment but with no money.

According to Deputy Executive Director of Erdogan Hospital, Hussein Mohamed, the senior leadership of the hospital is under the Turkish government.

Compared to other hospitals in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu, Ergogan hospital is advanced in terms of facilities and affordability.

Some of the equipment available at the hospital include X-ray machines, dental X-ray, Calculi Scan, CT scan, MRI and a complete laboratory.

“This hospital serves the entire society; the patients pay affordable hospital bills for the sustainability of the medical services,” the Director said.

“We are the first hospital to import modern dialysis equipment and low income patients are charged $35 only for dialysis services, he added.

He also noted that the hospital has 10 dialysis machines at the moment but they intend to increase the number to 32.

Nur confirmed that the hospital has five departments, namely the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Pediatrics unit, in-patient wards and gynecological department as well as a maternity ward.

The hospital employs 319 people, including medical and support staff. There are both Somali and Turkish doctors working at the hospital.

Erdogan Hospital owns a medical college where Somali medical practitioners are taught extra skills in the medical field.

Somalia has been in a 25-year-long civil unrest during which medical services and resources have been scarce. Restoration of Somali medical facilities, such as Erdogan are advancements that the local population are eager to welcome.
