Gamal Hassan, Somalia’s ambassador to Kenya says that workers have complained of low wages, lack of leaves and proper  contracts that would protect their basic rights.

“ICAO failed to protect the basic rights of the Somali employees - it also failed to secure work permits for them besides that employees used their students’ visa to work for 20 years.” Mr. Hassan said in an
interview with the Voice of America on Tuesday.

In addition, employees described their working conditions ‘poor’ with many worked more than two decades without proper contracts and benefits.

“No Somali government has since come to our assistance.” said Ali Jama, one of the ICAO’s employees in Nairobi who has been working at the agency since 1993.

No comment could be received from ICAO on the development.
