Sheikh Ali Mohamoud Raghe, alias Sheikh Ali Dhere, the spokesman of Al-Shabaab jihadists, said the movement was saddened that hundreds of Somalis perished in the Mediterranean Sea early this week.

Sheikh Ali said most of those who died were university and college graduates and blamed joblessness for the migration.

“All ports and airports in Somalia have been given to foreign contractors, rendering our young people jobless,” he said.

“Those who have given out the national resources are to blame for unemployment and migration.”

The statement was a reaction to reports that almost 500 migrants drowned near Libya. This was according to 41 survivors taken to Greece.
More than 200 of the dead were Somalis, reports indicated.

Meanwhile, 11 would-be migrants were arrested at Mogadishu’s Aden Abdulle International Airport on Thursday. According to a statement from the Director of Immigration and Naturalisation Department Abdullahi Gafow Mohamoud, the young people wanted to travel to Egypt via Nairobi.

“The Somali government decided to block all routes used by migrants and take action against those engaged in human trafficking,” he told reporters.
