The four, all of Somali origin, were arrested in a house inside the camp on Saturday, following a tip-off by the public that prompted police to cordon off the site in a sting operation.

North Eastern regional coordinator Mohamud Saleh said a team of security officers recovered assorted arms, including three AK-47 rifles, 92 bullets, seven magazines, eight magazine pouches.

They also recovered four first aid pouches, six mobile phones and more than 200 mobile phone motherboards used in making improvised explosive devices.

“We are still holding the four al Shabaab suspects aged between 19 and 24. They have been very cooperative and have given us crucial information,” Saleh said.

He spoke to the press at his office in Garissa town.

“We have all the information on strategies, movement, hideouts, strength and capabilities of the al Shabaab. We must get rid of al Shabaab in Kenya once and for all,” Saleh said.

Security on the Kenya-Somalia border has been heightened because some al Shabaab militias who have been defeated in Somalia are trying to cross over into Kenya as they have “nowhere to run to”.

Saleh said more than 50 al Shabaab suspects, among them IT experts, bodyguards of top commanders, informers, intelligence and financiers and have been arrested in three months.
