Ottawa West-Nepean Conservative candidate Abdul Abdi was busy on the campaign trail Sunday afternoon meeting with his supporters a garden party in Ottawa’s West end.  He was accompanied by Laureen Harper; wife of Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Overlooking the Rideau River, Abdul Abdi reiterated his party’s platform as well as speaking a little more candidly about his background and his experiences in Canada.  Abdul Abdi came as a refugee to Canada 26 years ago and after being the first Somali police officer in Ottawa he aims for yet another milestone as he hopes in becoming the first Somali federal MP.

Lending her support on the campaign trail was Laureen Harper who urged the audience that Mr. Abdi, with first-hand knowledge of law enforcement lends a credible voice to her parties ‘tough on crime’ sentence. She promised longer prison sentences for violent criminals at the center of their crime agenda.

Ottawa-West Nepean is a riding without an incumbent since former MP John Baird unexpectedly resigned from cabinet in February. Political analysts are saying it will be a tight race and of the ridings to watch closely on Oct. 19.
