Flames:Record second win

Goals from Gerald Phiri Jnr, John Banda and Chiukepo Msowoya inspired Malawi National Football team to a comfortable 3 nil victory over Djibouti in a group C at the on-going Cecafa tournament in Ethiopia.

Flames coach Enerst Mtawali maintained the same line up which managed to beat Sudan on Monday afternoon. From the word go, Malawi was a better side as Chimango Kayira and Phiri Jnr made things happen for the guest nation at the tournament.

First attempt at goal came through Msowoya whose volley just outside the penalty box was deflected for a corner.

Djibouti struggled a lot in the midfield no wonder they had few chances in the entire opening minutes of the match.

Despite pressing harder, the Flames failed to find the back of the net up until on 30th minute when Phiri Jnr slotted past the visitor’s advanced shot-stopper, 1-0.

Five minutes later, it was 2-nil in favor of Mtawali’s boys when Banda scored from the spot following a handball by Djibout in the penalty box.

However, the Flames were reduced to ten men when Shumaker Kuwali was shown a straight red card following a foul on one of the visitors’ players.

Come second half, the Riverains de la Mer Rouge started brightly considering the fact that they had a one man advantage over their opponents but Malawi’s defence led by John Lanjesi, Miracle Gabeya, Stainly Sanudi and Yamikani Fodya defended jealously to frustrate the Eastern and Central African country.

Malawi then completely buried off the game in style as Msowoya registered his second goal at the tournament with a super finish, 3-0.

Djiboutitried their level best in order to reduce the arrears but the Flames held on to collect another 3 points at the tournament.

The guest nation have sailed through to the quarter-finals of the tournament but they will play second placed South Sudan on Friday to complete their group C matches.
