NAIROBI (HOL) - Germany has donated €150,000 to support the victims affected by the floods in Hiran region that destroyed hundreds of homes and farmlands since last week.

In a brief statement from the Germany's Nairobi embassy on Tuesday, the government said the cash aid was provided to 'save' children hit by the floods that displaced thousands of families and children.

According to the UN office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the flash floods effected at least 132,000 people since Oct. 19.

Thousands of people in the low lying areas of the southern and central parts of Somalia remain at risk of flash and river flooding, OCHA said in a statement issued last week.

Germany has previously donated millions of dollars in aid to help thousands of Somalis affected by natural disasters and decades-old conflict.

The much-needed donations by German Government is significant at this point, as two strong cyclones Chapala and Megh have made a landfall in Yemen, causing property damage and loss of lives. a lot of damage in parts of coastal areas in the northeastern Somalia region of  Puntland.

The storms were characterized by strong winds and heavy rains with some areas receiving more than three times their annual rainfall, according to SWALIM.

The severe weather conditions led to livestock deaths, destruction of property as well as infrastructure including roads, buildings and boats.

Given the rainfall forecast and the high river levels, there remains a high risk of flooding along the lower and middle reaches of Shabelle and lower reaches of River Juba especially in areas with open river
breakages. Jowhar and some areas in Lower Juba continue to experience flooding, according to OCHA.
