NINETY-FIVE schools have been closed in Northeastern because of terror attacks, Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi yesterday told the Senate.

He said has directed school heads and county education directors to liaise with county commissioners and county police commanders to manage security.

Kaimenyi was addressing the Senate Committee on Education chaired by Kirinyaga Senator Daniel Karaba.

He said 12 secondary and 83 primary schools have been affected in Mandera, Wajir and Garissa.

“For the case of Garissa Teachers College the government has availed funds to construct a perimeter wall,” Kaimenyi said

The committee had earlier talked to the University of Eldoret's council, which said there are about five AP officers guarding the institution and individuals whose lives are danger.

Two months ago, villagers invaded the university and demanded the removal of vice chancellor Teresa Akenga

The five police men get an allowance that was agreed on by the council and the AP county commander, council chairman Sarone ole Sena said.

“The disruption of learning at the university was fuelled by an acting VC when Akenga was appointed. It later spread to local leaders.”

Kaimenyi backed the presence of police in education institution in the face of terror threats, as long as they are given allowances.

Moi University now has a police post. University of Nairobi students, who did not like police presence, now want a police post within the institution, he said.

The committee asked what action has been taken against headteachers who continue charging high fees.

Kaimenyi said the ministry has forwarded the names of the head teachers to TSC.
