Polling stations have closed their doors across Ethiopia, bringing to an end the country's parliamentary election, which started earlier in the day on Sunday.

Ethiopia's National Electoral Board described the voter turnout during the one-day poll as "very high."

The board said it would declare voter turnout figures later in the day.

"The board will provide exact figures when all information is gathered," board officials said.

"Generally speaking, the turnout was very high and satisfactory," they added.

Soon after voting hours came to an end, election executives and public and political party observers were seen signing forms and closing the polling stations.

Election results at polling station levels are expected to be announced on Monday.

Earlier on Sunday, the African Union Election Observation Mission said the electoral process was held in an "orderly manner."

Mission head, Hifikepunye Pohamba, added that a preliminary report about the election would be declared on Tuesday.

The students of around 37 higher learning institutions are expected to cast their votes on Monday, according to the electoral board.

It said the students had failed to cast their votes on Sunday due to the lack of election materials.

Fifty-eight political parties fielded up to 5,819 candidates in the election.

Preliminary election results will be announced after five days, according to the electoral board, which expected final results to be announced on June 22.
