Jorge Torrens Fábregas, 34, of Barcelona, Spain was killed Wednesday, April 29, 2015 in a car accident, which occurred near Hargeisa in northwest Somalia.

Born on August 28, 1980 to parents Virginia Fábregas and José Torrens, Jorge was a natural-born humanitarian and development champion.

Jorge brought a unique passion, energy and commitment to all aspects of his work. His achievements were enormous for someone so young.

At the time of his death, Jorge had spent nearly five years working for the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Somalia, where he implemented a wide range of activities ranging from the development of legal frameworks, to the construction of vital small and large-scale fisheries infrastructure, to the setting up of Somalias's National Fisheries Authority, and the development of a programe to deploy floating aggregation devices (FADs) along the Somali coastline to raise incomes and conserve marine environments, just to mention a few.

Jorge loved his work, his friends, and family. He is survived by his wife María Eugenia López-Rodó; his parents Virginia Fábregas and José Torrens; his sister Claudia Torrens.

FAO Somalia is organizing a commemoration in honour of Jorge's life and work at our premises in Nairobi on Friday 8 May at 11 am; all are invited to attend.
