A cargo ship carrying goods worth Sh1.5 million capsized in the Indian Ocean off Malindi on Monday afternoon.

The MV Waamu Star, which had 12 crew members, was heading to Djibouti from Mombasa when it developed mechanical problems.

Captain Omar Amud said water entered the engine when the ship started leaking.

He said all the five generators used for pumping water from the ship failed.

“We left Mombasa Old Port at 6am and the incident happened at 1am, but no one was injured,’’ he said.

Amud said they called the Kenya Navy and fisheries officials before fishermen helped them push the ship to the jetty.

The ship was carrying potatoes, plastic tanks, utensils, mineral water, beds, mattresses and tobacco.

Malindi police boss Matawa Muchangi said all the goods were removed although some were destroyed.

He said the ship was registered in Zanzibar.

Its owner, Mohamed Khalif, said residents looted some goods.
