The African Union (AU) Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has said the Union will not observe Burundi's local and parliamentary elections on Monday.
AU says Burundi had not met conditions to allow free and fair elections in compliance with the relevant provisions of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance.
In a statement on Sunday, Dr Dlamini-Zuma said that request for a consensual determination of an election date proposed at the meeting of the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC), held in Johannesburg, on June 13, which provide an appropriate framework which has not been abided by.
“AU Commission will not observe the local and parliamentary elections scheduled to take place this Monday,” Dlamini-Zuma said.
The Union called for dialogue and consensus for a lasting solution to the crisis in Burundi.
