Mpls. Offers First Somali-Language Food Safety Course

Wednesday August  5, 2015

The city of Minneapolis launched a new food safety class for Somali-speaking individuals on Tuesday.

City officials said this particular “ServSafe” class is the first Somali-language food safety course in the nation.

It was held Tuesday morning for restaurant managers and food workers in the Twin Cities. One woman, who owns her own childcare center, said she hopes to see more classes like this in the future.

“The lack of education is there, and the need is really there, so I hope that this gets bigger and bigger and bigger to the point where they get the test in Somali,” Ikarm Mohamed said.

Meanwhile, practitioners at Entira Family Clinics have several tips for practicing food safety while cooking both indoors and outdoors this summer:

  • Wash your hands and make sure surfaces are clean
  • Keep foods separated to avoid cross contamination
  • Cook at safe temperatures
  • Make sure to refrigerate items promptly
