Nine Somali refugees who escaped from Kakuma Refugee Camp in Turkana yesterday were charged in an Eldoret court.

They were arrested on the Webuye-Eldoret Road on their way to Nairobi.

Lugari district police boss Bernard Macharia said the nine were arrested on a roadblock.

Mohammed Abdi, Abdikadir Mohammed, Abdullahi Mohammed, Amina Mohammed, Hibu Halake, Sagal Walab, Muktar Hibo, Fatuma Abdi and Natasha Adan appeared before senior resident magistrate Dolphina Alego.

They were accused of being found outside the camp.

The nine pleaded guilty and requested to be taken back to the camp.

One of them said they wanted to join their relatives in Nairobi.

Police in the region have been cracking down on foreigners who are in the country illegally.

Macharia said police are vigilant, especially on major highways linking Kenya to neighbouring countries to stop entry of foreigners and suspected criminals.
