The Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud has applauded the Ugandan government for the significant investment into supporting the stabilization process in his country.

He made the comments while presiding over celebrations to mark Uganda’s 52nd Independence Day anniversary in Mogadishu, hosted by the Ugandan Ambassador to Somalia Maj. Gen. Nathan Mugisha.

The event was attended by foreign officials who included the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia, Nicholas Kay, senior officials of AMISOM, foreign envoys in Mogadishu, Somali government and security officials.

According to a statement by Maj. Deo Akiiki, the spokesperson of the UPDF contingent in Somalia, the celebrations were held under the theme: “Unity, peace, security and regional integration: key pillars for true and sustainable independence.”

Ambassador, Maj. Gen. Mugisha explained the historic relations shared between Somalia and Uganda recalling when Somali and Tanzanian forces supported Uganda during the period of political instability in the late 1970s, to the current mission when the favor is being returned.

“Today, Uganda marks 52 years since she gained her independence on the 9th October 1962. The journey for Uganda to become a free society has been long and odious. We greatly appreciate all those whose great effort contributed towards Uganda regaining her freedom, among other states,” he said.

He expressed confidence that Somalia is on the right path for development, cautioning peace building would require a holistic approach, especially incorporating Somali youths and addressing unemployment, lack of access to education, high levels of poverty.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud explained the historic relations between Uganda and his country and thanked President Yoweri Museveni for deploying UPDF in 2007, at a time when the world thought the situation could not be salvaged.

“Congratulations to H.E the President and the people of Uganda for the 52nd anniversary of their independence. We all are proud of the development, progress and prosperity Uganda has achieved in the last decades.

It is one of the role models that this region has and we will continue to follow them, and I appreciate and I say again, congratulations to Uganda”.
