Mogadishu (HOL) - Government forces in conjunction with Amisom has today conducted operation at the Bakara main market in Mogadishu. Business came to stand still and main roads entering the main market were closed. The roads that have been closed include: Baar Ubax,Black Sea,Al-Baraka and Shikoolee junction. There was also a shortage of public service vehicles and less movement of people. Most of the business areas were closed down.
Speaking at a press conference, a government official defined the operation as a way of disarming people and a search for Alshabaab sympathizers within the area.
The security in Mogadishu has been deteriorating in the last few days. During the holy month of Ramadhan alone, close to 80 people including government officials, police officers and civilians were killed.
This is not the first operation conducted by the forces at the market but a routine operation. Several people who were suspected of contributing to insecurity in the area were arrested.
