A Somali national was taken to court in Lamu on Monday over murder and destruction of property.

Officer Paul Abogi attached to the CID in Lamu West told the court that Ahmed Hassan is suspected of being among a group of people that committed brutal killings that led to the deaths of more than 78 people and the destruction of property of unknown value.

The crimes were committed in Kakathe, Pandanguo, Mpeketoni, Hindi, Kibaoni and Witu.

Ahmed was arrested on July 24 in Garissa town.

Abogi told the court that the police have sufficient evidence to treat Ahmed as a suspect in the case.

The accused is yet to be charged since investigations are still on.

Asked if he had any problem with being remanded till investigations are completed, Ahmed said: “I have not done anything but I leave it to God. There is no problem,”

He will be held in either a Lamu or Mpeketoni police station.

The case will be mentioned on August 11.

Meanwhile, four men were arraigned at the same court for allegedly being found in a place commonly associated with bhang smoking.

Hamisi Karisa, Dube Hassan, Kahindi Thoya and Issa Mzeewere arrested on July 25 at the Lamu seafront at a common bhang smoking ‘base’ near the county council offices.

They all denied the charge and were released on a cash bail of Sh15, 000 or a Sh.50, 000 bond.

The case will be heard on August 4.
