MOGADISHU  (Xinhua) -- Fierce clashes which broke out Friday morning in Somali capital Mogadishu killed 15 people and injured dozens of others, said health officials.

Somali government forces backed by African Union peacekeeping troops stormed the house of Ahmed Dai, a warlord and former commissioner of Wadajir district in Mogadishu after his militias resisted disarmament call, Somali government officials said. Dozens of the clan militias were arrested while the whereabouts of the warlord is unknown.

The raid is part of city-wide crackdown on illegal weapons launched early this month which has seen hundreds of weapons and ammunition recovered from warlords' homes and militias.

Somali government said it has proposed disarmament law to the country's legislature, saying that thousands of illegal arms are in the hands of civilians following decades of clan and Islamist strive in Mogadishu and other parts of the country.
