Telecom of Djibouti secured a 2-1 victory against Ugandan champions KCCA in their opening game at the ongoing Cecafa Kagame Cup on Sunday afternoon at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali.
A 44th-minute goal from Mustapha Mohamed gave the Djibouti side a 1-0 lead at half time before KCCA’s William Wadri equalised in the 67th minute to give the Ugandan outfit hope for a comeback.
Aboubakar Djama found the back of the net to score the winner at the fulltime mark to record their first victory at the annual regional competition and register a crucial three points that will come in handy as they hope to book a place in the last eight.
“This means a lot for us to win this game. I am happy with the way we played and we hope to continue with this kind of form,” mentioned Mohamed Ali Affasseh, the head coach of Telecom.
Meanwhile, KCCA’s head coach, George Nsimbe, referred to this loss as a wake-up call for his side that lost concentration in a game they should have dominated and won.
Nsimbe said: “We missed several chances that we should have capitalised on to secure victory. Telecom were particularly disciplined on defence and it paid off. We have learned our lessons and we shall come back strong in our next game.”
KCCA are currently third on the table standings tied with Rwanda’s APR and Telecom which lead in that order on goal difference. Kenya’s Gor Mahia and Atletico from Burundi each have a point.
KCCA will be up against Atletico on Wednesday at 3pm while Telecom face three-time winners APR the same day at 5pm.
