African Union troops have made significant progress in the war against Al-Shabaab, Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza has said.

During a visit to Somalia on Tuesday, the President noted the importance of their contribution to security and stability in the country.

“We are grateful to the African Mission in Somalia for the sacrifices made to help the country,” President Nkurunziza said.

He also expressed optimism about Somalia’s future and reaffirmed commitment to partnership with the government to establish peace and security.

“I am delighted to have visited Somalia at a crucial time for the Federal Government in their fight against Al-Shabaab and terrorism.

IMPROVED SECURITY

“The Burundi government has appointed its first Ambassador to Somalia, we also have our troops serving with Amisom who have been in Somalia since 2007 and the relationship between the two countries is excellent,” he said.

Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud reiterated the Burundian leader’s sentiments saying Amisom has improved security in the country.

“In the time that Burundian troops have been in Somalia as part of the Amisom mission, much has changed.

“Mogadishu, Kismayo and Baidoa were wrested from the control of terrorist elements and the cities are flourishing again,” he said.

The war against Al-Shabaab has intensified after the killing of two MPs this week. (READ: Second Somali MP killed in Mogadishu).
