The United States government has showed great concerns over the renewed tensions raging between Somaliland and Puntland, calling on both administrations to embrace peace and seek a lasting solution for their dispute through dialogue.

“The United States views with deep concern the mounting tensions between Somaliland and Puntland in the northern region of Sool.  We call upon all parties to refrain from violence and to seek resolution through peaceful dialogue.” The U.S. Special Representative for Somalia said in a press statement on Wednesday.

The statement noted that the United States continues to stand with the Somali people and will work closely with political and security leaders to promote security, peace, and stability.

Somalia's two rival northen regions contest several border regions in the area, some which may potentially be valuable oil blocks. There are claims on both sides about the issuing of overlapping exploration licenses.

“Building political cooperation among Somali regions remains essential for promotion of democracy, good governance, economic growth, and security in Somalia “carried the press statement of which HOL obtained a copy on Wednesday.

The United States still remains the biggest donor to Somalia and it is one of the frontrunner countries who have been involved in Somalia since the country fell into anarchy in 1991.

The message comes as Somaliland forces captured Taleex district on Tuesday claiming that the area was part of their territory, while the Puntland administration is also claiming the ownership of the region.

Latest reports from the region indicate that Somaliland forces withdrew from Taleex district nearly 20 hours after they occupied. Before their withdrawal the forces held talks with members from Taleex district community including elders.
