MOGADISHU – The Somali militant Al-Shabaab group on Saturday denied Kenyan claims about the rescue of two aid workers, saying it had released the two hostages.

In a statement, Al-Shabaab group the two Kenyan aid workers had been released on the occasion of the mass conversion to Islam by the residents of Barawa, a city in the Lower Shebelle Region.

"The Kenyan troops try to deceive the public opinion by spreading false news," the militant group said in the statement published by Somali Memo news portal.

Al-Shabaab claimed that it had helped the freed Kenyans to reach their country's border.

On Friday, Kenyan army forces said that they had rescued two aid workers taken hostage by Al-Shabaab group.
An army spokesman said that the two aid workers were in stable condition and that Kenyan authorities were making arrangements to fly them back to Nairobi.

The Kenyan government sent troops into Somalia in 2011 to hunt down Al-Shabaab militants who had claimed several attacks in the East African country.
