A U.N. official says that corrupt Somali politicians could face travel bans and have their foreign bank accounts and property frozen under tough new U.N. sanctions.

An analyst said such sanctions could help get food aid to famine victims.

Matt Bryden, who heads the U.N. arms monitoring group that provides an annual report to the U.N. Security Council, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that corruption is one of the main obstacles to peace in Somalia.

A team of eight investigators is due to begin work this week. It's the first time senior Somali politicians could face consequences for corruption in the 20 years since the country dissolved into civil war.
