Twenty nine Somali without identity documents nationals were arrested in central Mozambique trying to get to South Africa illegally, police said.

Ernesto Serote, police spokesman in Zambezia province, said the 29 illegal immigrants were arrested on Sunday in two minibuses— one of them driven by an off-duty police officer.

He said the Somalis, who claimed to be refugees, said they were travelling to South Africa where they expected to start up businesses.

Mozambique is increasingly used by illegal immigrants from other African countries to gain entry into South Africa, said Serote.
