Sheep meat price may fall

Sunday, November 0, 2009

JEDDAH (Arab News) -  The price of sheep meat should fall by about a fifth after an import ban on Somalia was lifted, according to the head of the livestock committee at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI). Fahd Al-Sulami said his committee’s decision would help stabilize the meat market.

He said that the decision paid off after the price of livestock in Djibouti Quarry station fell by 30 percent. The price of cows also dropped from $48 to $33, camels from $50 to $33 and goats from $11 to $9.

Livestock businessmen applauded the committee’s decision, as long as quality and health standards were maintained. They said such a move would reduce prices and make it more affordable for citizens.

Livestock businessman Sheeba Al-Zahrani said in the past imports were only coming from Djibouti, which hit them hard.,
