Mogadishu, Somalia (HOL) - In a press conference held in Mogadishu today, the Prime Minister of Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government (TFG) Mr. Nur Hassan Hussein (Nur Adde) said that Ethiopian troops will withdraw from Somalia even in the absence of UN peacekeeping forces if the fighting stops and security is restored.
“If people work together for peace and security and the fighting stops, then Ethiopian troops will withdraw from Somalia even if additional UN peacekeeping forces are not sent to Somalia”, said the Prime Minister who stressed that there will be no need for foreign troops if Somalis work together for peace.
The Prime Minister expressed hope about the implementation of the recent peace agreement between the TFG and the Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia (ARS). He said that the TFG is working on the implementation of the agreement.
He called on the Somali people to support the agreement which was signed in Djibouti. He called the agreement a golden [opportunity] and that a formal signing of the agreement will take place in Saudi Arabia.
On a different note, the Prime Minister talked about the numerous problems facing many Somalia in several countries such as Tanzania where they [the Somalis] were hoping to go through those countries on transit to other countries to seek refuge from the prolonged problems that have forced them out of Somalia. The Prime Minister requested from those countries to treat Somali refugees with kindness and dignity. He expressed sadness that Somalis have to face more problems after leaving their country to escape problems.
