Two Somali soldiers armed with automatic weapons have attacked an Ethiopian base in the city of Afgooye, 30 kilometers off Mogadishu.

The two soldiers opened fire and killed three Ethiopian guards in front of the base, Press TV correspondent reports from Mogadishu.

Heavy gunfire was exchanged between the two sides which led to the death of one Somali soldier.

The Ethiopians have launched a manhunt for the second soldier who has reportedly escaped the scene.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that following the incident, Somali government bases in Afgooye were targeted and several soldiers were arrested.

After the US-backed Ethiopian army toppled a government in Somalia in 1991, the country has become Africa's worst humanitarian catastrophe.

Somalia currently has no functioning national government and the country has been run for more than a decade by tribal factions and warlords.

The aid group Medecins Sans Frontieres recently blamed the international community for the 'severe humanitarian crisis' in Somalia.
