Mogadishu, Somalia (HOL) - The recently dismissed mayor of Mogadishu Mr. Mohamed Dhere insists on being the lawful mayor of the city.Speaking to Horn Afrik radio in Mogadishu, Mr. Dhere said that a memo issued by the president’s office and sent to the prime minister’s office with a copy to him stated that his dismissal was unconstitutional and that he remains the lawful mayor of the city.
Commenting on the reasons for his dismissal, Mr. Dhere attributed it to disagreements he has had with prime minister and man who was named the interim mayor of the city.
“There have been several disagreements between the prime minister and myself and I have talked about them publicly in the past but if the situation remains in its current status I will speak (of the disagreements) publicly”, said Mr. Dhere who added that the prime minister has personal animosity for him.
When the news of his dismissal got out, Mr. Dhere had said he was happy to step down but qualified it by saying as long the order has the president’s blessing.
Apart from Mr. Dhere’s claim of a memo from the president’s office reinstating him, there is no official word or public statement from the president’s office on the issue yet.
Facing daily attacks by insurgents, inability to assert authority in most parts of the country, worsening humanitarian and economic situation as well as neglect by the international community, this level of division and disagreement between TFG’s two highest ranking men will be a severe blow to any hope of establishing stable functioning central government in Somalia.
