They said the residence of Aden Hashi Gabo, the police chief of the provincial town of Baidoa, about 250 miles (150 kilometres) northwest of the capital Mogadishu, came under attack on Monday.

"The insurgents fired machineguns and grenades into his house, killing his daughter and two bodyguards," said Hassan Sheikh Mumin, a resident.

Another neighbour Hussein Ali said fighting raged for about an hour until policemen were sent to reinforce security.

Islamist militants have waged an insurgency mainly in Mogadishu since they were defeated by Ethiopian and Somali forces early this year, ending their brief rule in the country's southern and central regions.

The deadly insurgency has forced hundreds of thousands of people to leave Mogadishu in recent months, according to the United Nations, prompting warnings of an unprecedented humanitarian disaster.

Aid groups have said that insecurity is choking off efforts to deliver humanitarian supplies to those affected.

Numerous bids to restore stability to the Horn of Africa nation since dictator Mohamed Siad Barre was ousted in 1991 have failed because of clan warfare and unrest.

We all want to please and obey Allah (SWT) and we all are human and make mistakes or sins every day, it is a test we need to complete and pass it at the end. Gadh-HAYE - Brother, thanks for clearing that up, I really did not mean to insult anybody or my bro-Anti-Dabadh or anybody else for that matter, just stating my opinion on the subject since I just finished a core scourse on my MBA/TM in theology with concentration in Islam.

anti-dabodhilif @ 12/26/2007 10:09 AM EST  I just said what munaafiqiin do. You can correct me if you think I'm wrong. They do and say alot things. Like itis not the right time to follow sharia law blah blah because the kuffars dont want us to do that. Who cares  the kuffars? They allready disobey their creator and they want us to be like them. We canot please allah and the kuffars at same time. One other thing they say is they call 'brothers' other kuffars like Tikray and they call all bad names muslims. You can chalenge me without telling me that I'm committing more sins. How do you know I commit sings?

Gaadh-haye @ 12/26/2007 5:51 AM EST  Terminator, It may not be right but necessary. The mother and children were not the intended target. Consider it - if you are anti-occupation- as "collateral damage." Any thing that happens to the enemy and their sycophants is indeed welcome news.

If it is wrong or right is on the mind of the reader, state your opinion on the facts without insulting and accusing anybody!

Terminator @ 12/26/2007 1:00 AM EST  "Munaafiq" is the disbeliever who claims to be a Muslim by the tongue but denies Islam at heart. Also, describing a Muslim as Muslim and a Kaafir (infidel, disbeliever) as Kaafir is one of the fundamentals of Islam. Can anybody proof these inner human souls? I don’t think so, only Allah (swt) is capable of such readings, we can only be “obedient and submit” ourselves! Please learn Islam before committing more sins as such claiming to be knowledgeable of the Holy Quran and yet be subjective to be the prosecutor, the judge and the executioner at the same time! Perhaps, none of these issues apply to what happened to this family whom cowards have slaughtered their children.
