Is taking sides Kenya's way of peace brokering?

by Safi Ali

Kenyan foreign minister

It is downright rude and undiplomatic of Kenya’s Foreign Minister to meddle in Somalia’s internal affairs. And for some Somalis to lap up Moses Wetangula’s partial stance shows just how low we Somalis have fallen.  No sound judgment can come from one who listens only to what he wants to hear.

Whatever issues the President of Somalia has with his government is an internal Somali affair. A responsible leader, our President is doing his job. If that means sacking unprofessional servants who don’t know their job description, so be it. Our President was elected to do a job; he is not a lame duck baby-sitting kindergarten brats.

To his credit, President Abdillahi Yusuf is a Somali patriot, a veteran. He has a track record of resisting tyranny and nepotism. His record speaks for itself as he was one of the first brave hearts who, without regard to personal comfort or safety, stood firm against the dark elements of oppression, at a time many present-day politicians were wetting their pants at the sound of Siyad Barre’s voice.

President Abdillahi Yusuf is therefore an important Somali personality, an honest citizen, whose words and actions have always been one. He is by no means a hypocrite, nor is he a criminal.

With all due respect to Wetangula’s allegations----- Who is against peace in Somalia and who is not------ is not classified information. Fathers of lawlessness and the children they bred are a dime a dozen on the world market. Any small town bidder can buy them, and along with them our forefather’s soil, our dignity, and so shall be our Islamic heritage, if Somali people’s ills are not treated.

Had Somalis a fraction of our President’s steadfastness (without a doubt the first decent leader to emerge since 1991) they would’ve crowned him their national hero. But alas, today’s Somalis are just as short-sighted as the lying politicians, killers and former spies they blindly condone and follow. Therefore, if anyone were to be blamed it should be the criminals who happily sustain Somalia’s misfortune, not our honest President; his only fault being he put too much faith in tricky individuals, who are neither here nor there.

Unfortunately, the dark elements that have stripped our nation of dignity and empted our once benign streets of human life are still fooling their own souls. It goes without saying, any foreign establishment that meddles in Somalia’s constitution and tries to tie our President's hand is picking a fight with the Somali race; a Muslim community that straddles four recognized countries.

Moreover, by taking sides in a conflict between brothers, the international community is ganging up on one party, and unwittingly throwing yet again suffering Somalis into more disorder and mayhem.

On hindsight, could be that our former Prime Minister, Nur Hassan Hussein, his unprofessionalism, notwithstanding, is perhaps yet another victim of such self-serving ruffians? Time will tell.

A piece of advice to all Somalis of conscience: President Abdillahi Yusuf is a senior citizen, his days in office are numbered, it is therefore in our best interest that we trust in Allah and give this servant a breather to do his job; by taking on the challenge of presiding over misguided Somalis, President Abdillahi Yusuf has put his name and health on the line, the least we can do is to trust his judgment.

In the meantime, I suggest that we all take time out to reflect our fate as one people, one race whose successes and failures will always be seen as one.

It is so easy to fool the world, it is even easier to conveniently dodge our own faults, but how will that help us against Allah’s Justice?

Believe me, if we don't brighten up soon, no other nation will lose a sleep over our failures.  Already, Somalis are written off as weak primitive retards; fellow Muslims are ashamed of being associated with wild eyed blood thirsty animals who need fences and body guards.

I live in an Arab country I know how Arabs feel about us, and it has very little to do with the shade of our skin, it is just that the idea of being associated with wild eyed blood thirsty animals who need fences and foreign bodyguards gives the fellow Muslim Arab the creeps.

Let’s face it, as far as the rest of the world is concerned, the deranged murderer in the streets of Mogadishu and the innocent Somali woman caught in the middle of Somali madness are one and the same. The ugly and the beautiful of Somalia are also seen as one and the same, that's how interlinked our fate is. So why would others shed tears over us primitive folks when our failures and backwardness are ours and ours alone?

Recently, writer Ali Abdalla has drawn our attention to the stories of Somali women kept in the dens of Southern Sudan where they are continuously raped by SPLA soldiers and only sent on their way after bringing into the world tainted humans. But then again, since we've made hating each other a life-time career, I guess, we just can't be bothered to have time or energy to reflect our situation.

Incidentally, the world has moved on since 1991. Statiscally, the world population has increased since and earth resources are now more scarce than they were before 1991. The thinking world therefore is very busy thinking out ways and means of meeting the demands and needs of their populations. Our virgin lands and teeming seas are therefore a magnet to a lot of wetted appetites.

Is it any wonder then that far too many players, each with own immediate agendas ad long term target goals, are itching for our under-valued resources? Some competitors’ are already with us for a piece of whatever they can lay their hands on. ..

And what of our Enemy Satan? Think he has any reason to fret....when family divisions, broken relationships and conflict among brothers are what butters his daily accursed bread? With all the indecency that’s Somalia, the scenes of unsightly squalor, where dead bodies are disfigured and dehumanized, it is very much doubtful that Satan is displeased.

But Allah is beautiful and loves beauty. He is As-Salam and chose Islam as our Deen. He is Al Wudud and exalts the condition of those who love each other in His Name. Though He has the Power to oppress anyone He chooses, He has forbidden oppression for Himself and forbid His slaves to oppress one another.

Somalis: repent, lay down your arms, all of you, relax and take a deep breath. You don’t need fire to put out fire. Perform wudu instead, and ask Allah to forgive us all. What you can’t find in a state of calmness and purity, you will never find in the fires of hell.

May Allah have mercy on our people

Lets not support anyone because of the Clan they come from. It is the person not the clan. In a clan there are different people both good and bad ones. We have been stateless because of the clans we come from so lets not propagate it. Thank you

 LOL

Safi, you are indeed your brother's keeper. Be fair, your
uncle (As a Somali, he must be, i can read between the lines)
is not as patriotic or as clean as you want us to believe. I
suggest you to use some other adjectives, but, without
nepotism, and patriotic are not words that can go same
sentence with Yusuf. Try again next time, and keep in
mind you are talking to adults and not clan members.

I should be most gratefull your courtesy article Ms Safi Ali you are very articulate and objective person. It is unfortunate Kenyan Foreign Minister Moses Wetengula said that he is looking into imposing sanction against Somali President seems to me that He has only gotten one side of the story By listening to the Prime Minister Hasan Hussein and his patrons.Without reasonably investigating the matter. It is unfortunate Mr Wetengula didn't follow his own diplomatic guidelines and code of ethics. It is inappropriate and poses a substantial threat to our sovereignty,And deprives the country of the fullest utilization of their capacities for whole betterment of peace process and reconciliation. There for I would say this Kenyan Foreign Minister stop your vicious  intentional hamfull behavior,

Mr.yusuf is incapable of leading Somalia. He is physically and mentally not fit to lead this nation. He must go and resign as soon as possible. Somali people are suffering every where they are, they are suffering becuase of bad leaders who only care about themselves. Mr. yusuf and who ever voted for him to come to power are disgrace to our nation. He is war criminal that has to be brought to trial.
baghdad bob @ 12/18/2008 8:48 PM EST
True safi, yeey has spent some 40 years building our country with the support of ethiopian tanks.

Safi, tell the truth don't another Somali who supports so called leaders simply becuase they belong to a same tribe.Abdillahi Yusuf didn't do anything to bring peace to Somalia. He is do nothing warlord He must go.
I don't support any of the leaders. We need new people young leaders, WADANIYIIN JECEL DALKA IYO DADKABA. Safi you are a Somali lady who deserves my respect but tell me one thing that Yusuf have accomplished since he became the president of the TFG.
monadg @ 12/18/2008 5:28 PM EST
Seriously people, since when is having an opinion such an outrageous thing. Seems to me that the only time you see Somali's are willing to unite for any cause is when they collectively bash someone. Sometimes it can be less exhausting to just agree to disagree......without resorting to juvenile antics.

Clannish clowns are coming out of the closet!bsomeone told me that she wrote this shameful and sorry article but I was saying "maybe someone is using her name" well, truth is she was always a drenched and hopeless Yeeyist hiding behind words. I like how she calls other TFG officials Servants! classic n typical of her ilk

How far Somalia has fallen and what Moses said is one thing, singing songs of praise for Yufuf is quite another. Try telling this to foreigners but please, DONT TRY THIS AT HOME. We know him.
nomadic1 @ 12/18/2008 3:40 PM EST
fiqicigaal @ 12/18/2008 3:27 PM EST  Uncle Yusuf is eighty plus few years old. He is terminally ill and mad. Yusuf is possessed by the devil who invaded his mind telepathically , it over rides his freedom of thought  and forces him to be malicious , vengeful, uncompromising and destructive. Therefore it is time for the old tyrant to payback under the singular law of the ALL MIGHTY " as you sow so shall you reap."

I think this is the right place for this comment.

I could agree anymore. As a mark of respect, i will not add any more.

Well said Fiqi

President in Somali republic has certain role, that of cerimonial. I honestly believe Yusuf took the wrong job. He should have been prime minister if he wanted to micro-manage the government. I agree with you we only need 5 ministers and rest should be departments. I also disagree with Nur Cadde that we need 520 MP. The perfect number should be 300 and not a single person more. 200 for the people's house and 100 for upper house. We can't afford any much more.

calicaliyoow @ 12/18/2008 11:01 AM EST
It seems many of us are good at critizing and playing an opposition.   But there is an alternatives and it is called critical thinking  and getting a win-win solution for both the President and Mr. Nur.   Using brute forces does not work well.

The Prime Minister needs to set up sustainable cabinet.  Ask yourself do we really need ministry of Tourism to calm a clan or do we need to bring back security and rebuild our infastructure.   We need to set our priority right.

For the interest of Somalia,  the President should reconsider his previous decision and the Prime Minsiter  should show repect for hierachy.

As for the many of you still doing tribal drum bit.   Visit Mogadishu or watch video's  and see what we have done to Xamar after we got rid of Mr. Barre. Shabeele one of my favorite spot is still ruins and we have other people property still occupied.

Who is she kidding or is she just plain stupid! You must be the worst tribalist out there to sell for the worst warlord, a man who needs to be at Hague. Abdullahi Yussuf embodes everything wrong with the Somali republic. He has destroyed Somalia. Somalia and Somalia are longing for the day when this warlord will be gone. The last time I checked, Nur Adde was still a prime minister. Between the two men,I believe warlord Abdullahi Yusuf will be the first one gone. Somalis are fed up with him,the international community has finally seen the evil man he is,Kenya and Ethiopia don't want anything to do with him, they threw him to the hyenas i.e Al-shabab. If his clan want to follow him to the gates of hell, they are free to do so, but,Somalis will want to see nothing but his dead body. The make shift parliament will remove him by force from the presidency whether he likes or not.Our Ethiopian troops will not be protecting him any longer,so go figure.Warlord Yusuf is a dead man as of today, not a president no more.

Life spent on the road to power will eventually consume itself. Abdullahi did it to himself, and has no one to blame- it seems that he cared more sitting in that office and having discussion with a ghost, than managing expectations and repairing a broken nation.
To the writer: Debasing others while covering Abdullahi’s own fault is a classical Somali mentality.

Too good to be true! Even Abdillaahi Yuusuf’s wife knows its not true.

Only his mother (if she was lucky to be alive) would describe him with such qualities.

One thing I can say is that she dares!! But the question is does this women(if it is women) believe all what she wrote? If she truly believes what she wrote, then she is either insane or consumed by clan mentality that her judgment is non-existence. Let us examine her claims. Let me first of all say that I agree with her with one thing that Kenya, Ethiopia or any other country has no business in our internal affairs.
You claim that warlord Abdulahi Yusuf is a patriot, the reality is that he has been puppet and servant of Ethiopia for the last 40 odd years. He was the first person to organise clan revolt when Somalia was united back in 1978 triggering clan warfare that followed and consumed the nation. He is typical tyrant and nepotist, he destroyed SSDF pupping sub clans against sub clans. This bloodthirsty warlord has been committing war crimes for the last 40 years. It was warlord Abdulahi Yusuf who opposed several attempts to reconstruct Somali state. He opposed Cairo accors, Sodere agreement and the last TNG for clannish reasons. We all remember his infamous speech in Garowe insulting the president at the time and his wife and claiming that the reason he opposed was the TNG was led by a person of another clan. This warlord is harvesting what he has been sawing. He deserves to be taken to The Hague ti face his crimes and probably die there as Milosovich. What surprised me is , on one hand you talk about the future of Somalia and you mindlessly defend the biggest destroyer of Somalia. On one hand you detest the interference of foreign countries now the fate cought up with your warlord and you were cheering when Ethiopia wa massacring innocent Somalis.
ibn-somal @ 12/18/2008 5:00 AM EST
This is what she said after the Ethiopian occupation::

Whether we like it or not, what Meles Zenawi had done is save us poor Muslims from our Islamic brethren whose main occupation today would’ve amounted to nothing more than flogging s and women in the dirty streets of Somalia, i.e. if Zenawi didn’t come when he did.

Yusuf virtually lives in Kenya and so many of his so called goverment officials and Mr. Safi has the guts to tell Kenya not meddle in Somalia's internal affairs. It is beneath me to respose to the fantacy wrote by Mr. Safi because I had no recognition or respect for any of the so called TFG institution. Right from the start I believed it was a mistake and a waste of time. But similar to many of other Bush's projects the end result is a disaster. An American Official qouted by the Washington post saying Yusuf is finished and so is the TFG. it for the Somalis to learn from the 20 years of death and destruction caused by these warlords and not allow themselves to be turned against each other. May Alah protect us from these evil men

Midda kale walaal, "dark forces" and "fathers of lawlessness", waxaad mooddaa in laga fiicanyahay isticmaalkooda. Onece you recognize the indivisibility of our destiny, the use of such inflammatory words only serves the enemy.
My below comments I hope are not to be taken to be clannish in nature, Yusuf's clansmen have in recent Somali history produced many great men who have earned the respect and admiration of Somalis across the political and clan spectrum.
Ninfican @ 12/18/2008 1:34 AM EST
"Trust his judgment", many did, and look what that has gotten us.
Veteran he is ,a patriot? you must be kidding!
This guy will go down in Somali history I don't even have a word for him.
You referred to him as a servant of Allah(Jalla wacala), nothing in his long turbulent,  violent, treasonous career suggests he is recognant of his servanthood(if thats a word)of Allah(SWT)
As for kenya meddling into internal Somali affairs, Somalia has not internal affairs, its not a sovereign nation, its an entity by Kenya and to a larger degree ethiopia.
As matter of fact it should be them (both Ethiopia and Kenya)and them alone whom the TFG should be accountable to.
Aside from that, you speak eloquently of the fact that we are in this together must repent to Almighty Allah first and foremost.
Terminator @ 12/18/2008 12:50 AM EST
Yeey-Diid - You have already prosecuted and judged Mr. A/Yusuf, then why you are asking Alah (SWT) for justice? It doesn't make any sense - Typical Somali ingnorance where we as society can't believe in the "Due Process" of the law and other people thoughts without either insulting or killing them... The article clearly reflects one view and makes some usefull points and it is up to the Forum to reflect otherwise Objectively!
