If there is one issue that unites Somalia’s famously quarrelsome politicians, elites and ordinary clansmen it is the issue of Somaliland’s secession: They oppose it to a man, child and warlord.
Members of the ineffectual but secular Transitional Federal Government (TFG) oppose Somaliland’s secession as vehemently as the most fanatical of its Islamist enemies.
What drives this determination to keep Somaliland into Somalia’s death embrace remains unclear. It cannot be patriotism for surely if Somalia’s leaders, elites and clansmen had any of the stuff left they would have spared the Somali people the biblical suffering they have been so cruelly inflicting on them over the last 17 years through their selfish greed and primeval political machinations.
Neither is it driven by obvious economic interests because Somaliland and Somalia were never economically interlinked even during the 30 year-Union and have no economic links today whatsoever.
It cannot be some kind of brotherly goodwill they hold for the people of Somaliland because they harbour indeed venerate war criminals who participated in the pogroms and massacres against Somalilanders in the 1980s. Witness how both the TFG and their nemesis the Islamist Courts welcomed General Mohamed Omar Hirsi Morgan known as the `Butcher of Hargeisa’ throughout Somaliland for his genocidal activities in the late 80s when he was Siyad Barre’s chosen Milatary ruler of Somaliland. The TFG even recently chose him as a member of a high powered delegation to Kuwait.
The Somalia diaspora rallied around another suspected war criminal General Mohamed Ali Samatr who Siyad Barre’s Defense Minister in the 80s after Somaliland refugees in the US tried to have him arrested for War Crimes. This man who is alleged to have ordered the carpet bombing of Hargeisa by Rhodesian mercenaries hired by the Somali Airforce, all of a sudden became a focal point for all Somalis in the US, Canada and beyond. They lobbied and fundraised and held meetings and formed support groups and all to avoid this man investigated by a court of law. These and many other examples amply demonstrate that the elites of Somalia may not have the best interests of Somalilanders at heart.
Yet remarkably Somalia’s venal political classes, discredited elites and mostly disingenuous intelligentsia abroad succeeded in convincing the world that the recognition of Somaliland will somehow `harm’ Somalia itself. The world did not bother questioning this ludicrous assertion because frankly, no one is interested in Somalia, Somaliland or Somalis in general. As far as the international community is concerned, the place(s) and the people are among those the less one hears about the better. Nothing ever comes out of there except wars and refugees and the occasional would-be terrorist.
In other words the world seems to have adopted an `Ignore and Avoid’ policy on the Somaliland vs Somali issue. They are happy to repeat the mantra: We don’t want to recognize Somaliland because it will further complicate the situation in Somalia’.
This is not only morally and ethically dubious; it has no plausible basis in any assessable, measurable reality.
It is like being told to remain tied to your neighbour who is burning his down because if you untie yourself from the inferno the neighbour may get even madder and burn his house down with even more gusto!”.
Surprisingly this `logic’ is not used in Kosovo, Macedonia, Slovakia, Monte-Negro or any of the 20-odd new States who emerged (or about to emerge in the case of Kosovo) in Europe over the last 16 years.
Ironically that is the same number of years Somaliland was one of only two nations in Africa, the other is Southern Sudan, seeking the same freedoms and human dignity given to their European counterparts.
But the idea that Somaliland’s recognition will make things worse for Somalia is equally untenable on factual pragmatic grounds too.
For starters it is hard to foresee how things could get any worse in Somalia. This may sound a little cruel but under the circumstances, it is an apt and valid one to raise and examine.
Secondly, Somaliland and Somalia have been two de facto separate states for the last 17 years. Somaliland was not party to the events and issues that shaped Somalia after the collapse of Siyad Barre regime in 1991.
On its part Somalia occasionally tried to meddle in Somaliland’s affairs, usually in the shape of brotherly attempts to undermine the place or better still, destroy it altogether. But its’ ever bickering politicians soon lost interest in the affairs of distant `Qaldanland’ (The land of he always wrong) as they sometimes call it and concentrated on the important business of creating mayhem and mismanagement at local level.
So a recognition of Somaliland will be an acceptance of an existing reality on the ground and not creating a new one. This means that even in a worse case scenario, a recognition of Somaliland will have a neutral impact on the situation in Somalia.
Indeed it could have a far more positive impact than many people think. It may just make the political groups in Somalia realise that the world rewards those who bring about peace and stability through compromise, the upholding of the rule of law and the establishment of functioning secular democratic systems. The message a recognition will send to Somalia’s political classes is that the world is fed-up with your antics and lack of vision and may indeed `Ignore and avoid’ you from now on and shift its focus and resources to those who better deserve it.
It just might nudge them into taking some action to save their political careers and in the process save their people from further misery.

Wise and intelligent people discuss the situations for example what is going on in Somalia and Somaliland, but stupid people with no brains whatsoever and who have no capacity to reason logic, only discuss clans.Unfortunately, this is the whole reason why the commentators in this forum appear to be immature and childish. Wth this attitude Somalis are doomed. Those who can not get over the clan issues and discuss the core and important issues should stop wasting time.

Why these guys are still dreaming to disremembering our homeland?. U habar awal guys go to hotel gion and sure you will be served well in the hand of Amhara masters

Importand and valid points Mr. Guled. keep up the good work. Recognition means progress and prosperity for Somaliland. For Somalia it will be an eye opener, a wake up call to re-think their strategy and concentrate more on their internal affairs and reconciliations.

Somalis are all warlords. Since no body wants to lead this war lords to world courts, Maybe World Courts raise/build a world tower for makeup towards all names for world bullies (US,RUSSIA,CHINA} and maybe the selling and the buying.

... i do beleive you and your MEN enjoyed the troubled South-Somalia. you do want to see a peace in the south but one day insha allah will be peace, to me you do nt do any good to me. you are worse then the ones in civil war in south becuase you did nt do any thing at all accept watch and relax.. you GO your selves. but release the hostage DHulbahante and gadabiirse, give their land and liberty.

There should be a 'fair' election and survey, from awdal region to sool & sanaag..After that, if most people from these regions want a sovereign state based on peace and good governance, then Somaliland should be regognized..Its as simple as that..18 yrs of bloodshed should'nt hold people who want to live in peace hostage..Live and let live is what i say..

"CAPTAIN MORGAN was welcomed by the TGF and the Islamist. " Morgan is an opportunistic thug who sadly was given amnesty by the ICU when they thought he renounced his old bad habits. They were wrong and as soon as the enemy invaded the criminal thug became one of the leading enemy colaborators. Doofaar Ma Daahiro indeed.

I sense extreme hostility towards the inhabitants of somaliland among some of the individuals in this forum and that is not the sort of thing that would bring somalis closer. I wish peolple would go and read about history before coming with all sorts of alligations. The idea of a Somali nation was born in 1960 after the South and North united and bear in mind that the union was not formally prosessed and ratified. Before 1960 we were ruled by Western colonies and before that by reminance of the Otheman empire in other words we never had a nation called Somalia before 1960. We tried to build a nation called Somalia and we failed miserabaly why??? Because people are so addicted to a thing called CLAN that their loyalty is there rather than to a nation. Those are the ones that talk about clan domination and their clan not getting this or that. That is what is happenning today with the TFG today as there are fundemental flaws with how the administration is built namely 4.5 which means that every clan will try to secure themselves the highest power. Our clan wants this position and that position which automatically creates hostility among clans. Does it make sense to be entiteled to power because of your geneology rather than your competence??? Well Somaliland has at least implemented a multi party system where every individual that is interested in politics has a shot at the top position as long as one is an active member of a registered party. Some people are unfortunately still stuck in the 1980s and are still talking about SNM. You are either blinded by clan hatred or you havent been following what has been happening in Somaliland for the past 16 years. Dhahir Riyaale was elected president in 2003 fair and square and he is not from SNM or the dominating clan why?? Beacuase of the multi party system my freinds. Djibouti has said no to the Somali unity we so much cherrish and they have managed well. Somaliland is doing a similar thing by claiming their independence back and they have managed to prosper since they have declared their independence from the old Union.
Many of you contradict yourselves when on the one hand you are for Somali unity while on the other hand Djibouti is not taken into this equation. Somali Unity my freinds is about uniting the whole of the Somali people under one state and that includes NFD, Djibouti and Ogadenia. That is what the white star represents and the reason the Somali nation was created in the first place. The question is then how can we make this possible without sheddind any blood and pointing fingers at those that are trying to build a nation based on democracy. Do we have to invent the wheel again or can we learn from other people that have fought each other for centuries and are united today under a common market called the European Union.
We all want the same thing namely the Somali unity but differ most on the remedy.

XUUMOW, was that an attempt to make me feel bad bro? Morgan has more blood on his hands than all other warlords combined, cause Morgan had Soviet made weapons funded in $100s of millions used on civilians in the north while ur pathetic warlords that roamed Mogadishu for 17 7years only possesed ak-47s. Morgan killed 50-100 in one year bro, so u go do the math sxb and reason (if that now is even possible for a south Somali to do).
Secondly, why are you people crying after a people that don't want anything to do with you? Stop acting like a scared little infant, grow some confidence and learn how to walk on ur own.
Somaliand = desertland, no recources what so ever, whereas Southern SOmalia is full of recources, so in my resoning the only reason why you want northern Somalis is cause you feel like you can't form a nation on your own since we all know that the idea of the Somali republic was initiated from "Qaldans", flag and many other things forming a nation was also initiated by qaldans, have some pride and stop crying after a people that don't want to be associated with you.

IT'S time for us to grow up.somaliland, puntland, south somalia, djibuti, ethopia somalia, Nfd..it was hard enough triying to unify 5 colonies..now we have 6 or maybe more... Lets forgive eachother ...lets pave a new road for our children and the coming generations... Lets think...not destruct...... VIVA SOMLIA>>>ThE GREAT>>>
|
|
Not only are all southern somalians almost to a child against your pathetic dreams; but we somalis too of NFD and OGADENIA opposed to your high treason. "somaliland" and somalia have never been defacto separate states at any give time. Indeed Puntland state of somalia administers 60% of the former british somaliland. These oft repeated lies do not wash. only qaldaans can believe them. Stay in limbo.
|
|
Every somalilander that you ask why you are willing to have independent state, the answer is simple, we were massacred by Siad Barre. No other justification. Yes, Mr Barre was not good idea for him to attack his people but at the same time Ethopia was pushing hard and arming the SNM to seperate and establish an independent government from the rest of somalia.
Bro you have taken the case of Cosova and sudan, let me tell you something the somali situtauion is totally differnent from that, these people are different in faith, and race but we somalis are same, there is no caltural and religion difference . in addition to this we know that Mr Morgan is war-criminal and so as Mr Riyale kahin because he served for the same regime speacially he was head of Somali Intelligence agency while you somalianders nominated him to lead somaliland as President, is't biase.?
To me I believe somalia is one and no one can divide it, and Insha Allah great will stand it's feet again after the defeat of Ethopia.
|
|
No one will reward the custody of an entire region to one particular family, of whose obsession with independence stems from being clanophopic.
|
|
No clan can dominate another clan. The idea of Somaliland is only entertained by one clan, and it's limited to only a few cities in the NorthWest of Somalia. Riyale and his gang are misleading Isaq by using Isaq-SNM militia to conquer other clans and other cities to force them into colonial seperation.
For 17 years, Isaq clan did not experience the civil war that other Somali clans went through. Riyale has misled Isaq young men into taking part of Somali civil war.
No more peace in Hargiesa and Burco

It is time to save the burning house first ratter than getting bogged down who should take the which room.
Remember the time the Italian invade Somalia they counted on the existing differences in Somalia, to bring that proud nation down to its knees. However patriotic Somalis called every citizen to Save the motherland by saying
Somaliyeey tosoo tosoo isku tirsada ee hadba kiinaa tak daranee tageera weligiinee. I think this song came from Somaliland, where are they?
|
|
There is no time to entertain differences while Somalia is on the verge of destruction. Everyone should put its grievance and differences on hold and Rally around, to rescue Somalia from Woyane's destruction onslaught. Differences had always been there throughout history of Somalia and will be there in the future.
However, Somalians have a culture of ignoring differences at the time of crisese and rally around the country.
It is time to save the burning house first ratter than getting bogged down who should take the which room.

I don't agree with separation, but I agree with you that good behavior should be rewarded, we should give Mogadisciu a break since we produce nothing but warlords and our future capital should be Hargeisa.
Somaliland need to lead the way.

Stickorcarrot yes we were tribes that had no visible borders, but bear in mind that before the western colonial powers we were under the control of various OTEMAN empires. The south were more or less under the Omanians while the North was under the Turks. The problems we inherited from the colonial powers are not unique to us. Other African nations have suffered the same plight where unrelated tribes were forced together under borders drawn by the imperialists in 1884-85 at the BERLIN CONFERENCE.
Now modern African nations have accepted that faith and moved forward while we are still stuck in clan mentality. Somali clans live in various parts of the Horn and the people you call Isaaq live both in Somaliland, Western Ethiopia and Djibouti. No more clan mentality my friend, we want a multi party system where every individual can participate and become a candidate based on their credentials (what he or she can) and not which clan they belong to.
The only time we had the chance to build a Somali nation was when the South and the North united in 1960. Unfortunately to the lack of educated people that could run a country, we resorted to the only thing we knew CLAN AFFILIATION (Read the history of the Somali nation and how the parliament was divided). Most of the African nations that gained independence in the late 50s and 60s had also very view educated individuals and experienced a similar faith but recovered from that while we on the other hand are still led by people who still believe that clan and politics go hand in hand together. What a shame to be in the 21st century and still be dominated by bunch of narrow minded people who clan die harders.
I do believe that Somaliland is trying to do the right thing by building a nation that consists of several clans in a democratic way. We don't have to look very far as Djibouti has done it why can't Somaliland and in the long run when we are no longer killing each other and really understand that united we stand and divided we fall will we be able to unite. 52 years ago Germany, England, France and most of the European countries were at war with each other. The cold war finished 19 years ago and today you have the previous eastern block countries been part of the European Union. So brothers and sisters please wake up from the old dream and start building a new era so that one day the whole of Horn Africa is more or less like the European Union were borders don't exist and only then will our brothers and sisters in Djibouti,Somaliland,NFD and Western Ethiopia be united with us.

Woow. The likes of Kosovo, Macedonia etc...that is very dubious argument. The thing you have to understand is, these nations were created in the 19th and 20th century by powerful empires. In our case, the artificial line that you call border is what is being created by the empires. Before them we had no borders we were tribes living among each other so i think your argument would have been better if you say our tribe wants our territory and then we can talk about that.

Indeed Somaliland recognition will have a positive effect on Somalia. Such recognition will definitely create an opportunity for them to wake up to the reality and start sorting out their internal mess and the chaotic situations prevailing there. They may suddenly regain there spirit of competition realizing they are being left behind.

Appalled, one article changed your mind. That speaks volume. Morgan, just like most of the other MPs is a warlord and probably has blood on his hands. But, because of his wrong doings in the North doesn't make his better or worse criminal than his counterparts in the south.
We are all equal.

momo519 my friend we have been a burden to the International Community for the past 17 years. The point I am trying to make is that Djibouti has survived without been part of greater Somalia and the International Community recognizes the borders left behind by the colonial powers which means NFD and Ogadenia are recognized as been part of Kenya and Ethiopia. As I said earlier, I would like to see peace and stability in the whole region such that borders really become artificial as they have become in Europe( look at the Schengen countries). Animosity and hostility is what is keeping us from reaching that goal. Unfortunately African countries have yet to resolve the problems left behind by the colonial powers. We are mostly fighting each other because of border issues and the irony is that the weopons we use are mostly bought from the former colonials. ethiopia agains Somalia, Ethiopia against Eritrea, Somalia against Kenya and so on.
The question I would like to ask is what is wrong with Somaliland as been an own state. As long as the inhabitants of that state have peace, prosperity and are building democratic institutions I see no reason why they should be denied that right. As I said earlier, in order tio unite, we first have to understand what it is to be a nation. A nation that is not built on clan affiliation (4.5), but rather built on a multi party system and every individual has a shot at participating in the nation building. Somaliland is a young nation which is desperately trying hard to build democratic institutions despite all the odds. One cannot claim everything to be perfect there, but they are on the right track. So my friend one cannot build a house without first building its foundation. To achieve Somali Unity, we have to go back to the drawing boards and teach our people what it means to be a democratic and fair country.
If the goal is for Somali Unity which we all yearn for and look forward to, then we should start considering alternatives. It makes no sense in trying the same remedy for 47 years over and over again.

It's really a tragedy for an educated Somali to write a letter letter like this. North west of Somalia is a home of many clans. It's Home for Gudebersi,Isaq, Warsengeli, Dhulbahante and Issa. Majority of these clans are not part of secession movement led by a few people such as Riyale and his gangs. People who live in Sool, Sanaag and Eyn chose to be part of Puntland. Borame and other regions populated by Gudeberse and Issa clans have already been under the domination of SNM since the Fall of Siyad Bare, and they are controlled by SNM militia by force. But their people are pro-unity and against the disintegration of Somalia. Let's assume all Isaq wants separation from the rest of Somali clans(Howiye, Darood..etc), then we let them have it. But it has to only be limited to the cities of Isaq. Rest of Somali clans are trying to find a formaula to form a united Somalia(ICU, TFG, etc). I believe majority of Somalis will not allow Somalia to be disintegrated into small, weak states like the Gulf countries

"Somaliland is already recognized by Djibouti and Ethiopia."
Onother word for: No one recognized Somaliland. Ethiopia, will support anything that would undermine Somalia.
You are better off with us. Together we can achieve more.

I am a somalilander, I live on the soil of somaliland.. I was born in somaliland,So was my fater and his father before him..... And so, i do not belive in the seperation of somalia... It is my voice and the people of my region that the world should listen to.. NOt to those mercenaries that want to sell our land to ethopia... Long llllllllive great somalia....

Somaliland is already recognized by Djibouti and Ethiopia. the countries they have border with the third SOmali not able to solve their internal issue. Sooner or later this will come and that day i will be there to support my S/land brothers and sister for their hard working.

Mr GULED you tried to write somthing but dont forget this that "somali is one" who ever wants to show his or her oppinion they are free for that but no one has the rights to seprate the somali people, so i hope justice will come soon.the greater somalia is on the way .long live somalia
|
|
Because they have oil and you don't. You are creating another poor African state that will also be a burden to the International Community.
|
|
This is the kind of hostility is what the author is talking about. I for one would like to see peace, stability and prosperity in the Horn of Africa rather than considering everybody as an enemy. If we don't resolve our problems in a civilized manner today, the generations that follow will suffer.
We have unfortunately inherited border problems from the colonial powers and all our misery lies there. We have been trying to fight this for the last 47 years without any success and I don't see how we could ever unite Somalia under ONE (Djibouti, British Somaliland, Italian Somaliland, NFD and Somali region in Ethiopia). The truth is that the only nation Somalians have ever known is the one that was created in 1960 after the North and the South united and we know the rest of history.
I believe the dream of greater Somalia has been shattered by Djibouti in 1977 and yet we do not criticize Djibouti for not wanting to be part of Somalia but praise it. It is about time we open our minds for alternative solutions than the one that has been tied for 47 years without results.
Somaliland and its people had no part in what is going on in Somalia today on the contrary they have shown great generosity and kindness to our brothers and sisters who suffered and fled the unjust war there. We should widen our horizons and see the bigger picture. History has shown that people that have common interest eventually unite (look at the European Union), but for us to reach that stage, we must first build democratic institutions that are not based on 4.5 and I believe Somaliland is on the right track having achieved peace and prosperity for the last 17 years and I wish that we praise for that rather than name calling and trying to create hostility among Somalis. After all we are all ethnically Somalis, but we haven't yet learned to share an administration and if the Gulf states like Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and the Emirates manged to be different countries based on the borders left behind by the colonials even though they share the same ethnicity, language, religion, culture and history why can't we???
|
|
People are now uniting rather than creating new border and tension between brothers and sisters. I honestly think it is in the best interest of the people of the north to be part of the bigger and better Somalia. Perhaps a mistake was made in the 80s when the government at that time attacked some cities in what is now Somaliland. Similar mistakes have been made in the past 17 years which effected the lives of every Somali. We need to put the past behind us and resolve our differences.
Going alone and becoming a "nation" will not help Somaliland.
|

RECOGNITION OF SOMALILAND IS GOOD FOR OUR OUR ENEMIES. DABODHILIFS YAA HADAL KA MAQLAAYO. HA ISKA NAC NACLEEYAAN. WAKHTIGOODII WAX YAR BAA U DHIMAN.

Mr. Guled Ismail
Although it is hard for you to comprehend, we do not despise the concept of Somaliland out of childish envy and jelousy. We despise the concept for all it stands for, here are four main points.
1) Somaliland represents a colonial relic, which deserves neither the future nor the respect of the Somali people.
2) Somaliland represents the balkanizing of somalia by clannist group, who fear they might lose representation in greater Somalia.
4) Much like the TFG, its system org in Puntland, Somaliland is the first and foremost client of our arch foe.
Somalis of Hargaysa, Borao, Berbera had over 17 years to take a leading role and revive somalia under their leadership and terms, instead you opted to contribute to the misery at every instance and de facto try to cut ties when the going got tough. If there were any true strong patriots in Somalia, they would ensure our norther citizens are awakened from this daydream.
|
|
"Somaliland and Somalia were never economically interlinked even during the 30 year-Union and have no economic links today whatsoever"...This is naive ignorance or a deliberate missrepresentation of the reality. The Hargeysa economy is very dependant on Mogadishu. If Mogadishu based companies such as Dahabshiil is closed for good in Hargeysa, the results would be devastating for people in the North. "a recognition of Somaliland will have a neutral impact on the situation in Somalia". This is also far from the truth. A recognition will produce a negative impact not only in Somalia but for the whole region. There will be many more secessionist states thereby threatening the stability of the region, the continent and the world. The Warsengeli already declared their independence from Somalia, but Puntland is Cadde Muse and Riyale Kahin are crushing their spirit and self determination. Awdal has submitted their intention to secede from Somalia right after Somaliland. We have heard Jubaland. We have heard Midland. We have heard Ogadenia. We have heard Biafra. Does it ever end? The existing reality is that Somaliland has been managing its own affairs just as equal as Puntland. If Somaliland is accepted, Puntland could also demand the same. Whoever accepts Somaliland will aslo have to accept Puntland and Midland and Jubaland. You got the point?

“If there is one issue that unites Somalia’s famously quarrelsome politicians, elites and ordinary clansmen it is the issue of Somaliland’s secession: They oppose it to a man, child and warlord,” Guled Ismacil.
Indeed we value you.
Every part of Somalia is sacrosanct, and we hold dearly close to our heart.
Today, the world is coming together and forming regional blocks and economic unions. Gone are the useless borders and different currencies in most of Europe. Other countries in Asia, the pacific and Latin America and Africa, are likely to follow suit and come together
The world is coming together to create, regional and continental economic power houses Why separate a roughly 10 million people, who share religion, language and cultur

Erigravo, before u havea go at the writer, first think. 17 years somaliland has been waiting for you to sort out the mess in somalia. How long do u want them tocontinue waiting? . Am from somalilanders by birth but unionist by nature. Brother you have got only 4 years to fix the stupid situation in somalia otherwise by 2012 you will have no other options but to consider somaliland independent country. Caz even i wont be doin somaliland justice by advocating for it remain a part of somalia.

A bigoted conclusion and a clannish outcry for a Banana state!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Guled is drowning himself in waves of ignorance, hatred, and outright strangulation of the history and political complexity of the countries he listed as a source of back up for his warped thoughts and impossible concept of drawing a comparison for the frivolous 'Somailaland' case.
A little Wikipedia search could have helped him learn that the countries he listed were all under a federal based system with people of distinct culture, history, language and political development.
No "border" exists for "Somaliland" and no general consensus can be made and solicited from the majority of Somalis. It is only a tiny tiny clan in the middle of no Man's Land who are hell-bent on confounding the world besides contributing to the chaos of culture in the Horn of Afica.
