Islamist
fighters in Somalia's capital have fired mortar bombs at the
presidential palace and attacked African Union(AU) peacekeepers.
Fighting raged on Saturday night leaving three people dead near
Bakara Market, and the AU called on the United Nations to impose
sanctions on Eritrea, which Mogadishu accuses of backing the fighters.
At least 45 people had been killed in clashes a day earlier.
A
senior Burundian officer told the Reuters news agency: "Opposition
groups have attacked us with rocket-propelled grenades. They are still
firing at us and we shall defend ourselves."
In
a statement, the AU called for a no fly-zone along with a sea blockade
off Somalia to stem the flow of weapons from Eritrea, which denies
supporting the Islamists.
Eritrea has recalled its AU ambassador in retaliation.

Hizbul
Islam and al-Shabab fighters, linked to al-Qaeda, have intensified
their offensive against the new government of Sharif Ahmed, the Somali
president.
Somalia's neighbours and
Western governments fear the Horn of Africa nation, mired in civil war
for 18 years, could become a haven for Islamist fighters unless the new
government can defeat them.
A human rights group said a lull in
the violence on Saturday saw many residents fleeing, joining 49,000
others who have left the city.
But heavy gunfire and explosions could still be heard as people fled.
The AU, which has some 4,300 peacekeepers from Burundi and Uganda in
Mogadishu, is protecting key sites but its mandate limits the force to
defending itself when attacked.
Islamist fighters took up arms in 2007 to drive out Ethiopian troops
propping up a Western-backed government which failed to wield control
over much of Somalia.
Since the start of 2007, fighting has killed at least 17,700 civilians and driven more than one million from their homes.
About three million Somalis survive on emergency food aid.
The Ethiopians withdrew at the start of 2009 leaving Somalia as they found it - in chaos and with a weak central government.

Human life is priceless let alone the lives of our Somali women and children….and Yet, there are those who joyfully cherish on this never ending cycle of violence.
I guess Dahir Aweys, H. Turki, Al=Sha*b and others like it are determined to press on with the “Barbarian and Savagery” mind-set, but make no mistake…. history and time will definitely work against them!

We can not hide the scale of violence and unrest alshabaab created in their persue to conquer Somalia. The death tall and the displacement of families increases by the day with no where to run for safety.
Uncle Yusuf would have been awarded the highest medal for dismembering Somalia and accommodating Ethiopian invation and its occupation on the south.
One of the heart breaking moments in Somali history was when the enemy erected its flag on the roof of Villa Somalia and Wasaarada gaashandhiga, it was humiliation beyond belief.
Never the less, alshabaab with its foreign fugutives have brought more surprises to the ever unsuspecting poor Somalis in the name of islam. What a fa*ce.

Even though I cant recall ever attacking Yusuf per se, I believe he was the father of all warlordism. He started Somalia’s demise with Ethiopian tanks and finished it off with Ethiopian tanks.
Yes, i think it is fair to say that the foreigners know more about Somalia than the Somalis know about themselves. These so called calamity leaders dont know “their right hand from their left hand” if i might borrow from Fiqi.
The Aweys and Turki double act will only prolong the suffering of the Somali people at best, or may even make it worse by turning our country into a battle ground for foreign ideologies.
We Somalis are muslim already, so we dont need the Muslim and the non muslim world to fight over our women and children. Let the Muslim world settle their problems with the West in their countries and let the West settle their problems with the larger Muslim world in their countries.
Let these poor Somalis tend to their most pressing needs.
We cant just keep on chasing shadows and reinventing the wheel.

I saw him on tape couple days ago,during Yemen national day
festivities. He is sitting next to Saleh the presidentm taking
Salutes from Yemen Army, and watching parachuting Air force men.
For a moment i thought is this president of Yemen or what?!!

Nearly a decade ago, an article on Somali by the Economist went like this.
“Civil war is development in reverse, immature societies (Somalis) riven by tribal passion are doomed to fight for years to come.”
And the article ended like this
“Asking warlords to accept peace is just like asking a champion swimmer to empty the pool”.
Aweys and Turki have now assumed the place of the warlords by carrying on where the warlords have left off. The intension is the same (greed and power), the means are the same (violence and brutality) and the result is the same (sheer devastation).
So, now, immature Somalis riven by religious passion are doomed to fight for years to come.
Somalia’s best interest can be realised by supporting the current set up and then working towards inproving it along the way. The sooner we realise that, the better.
