New Somali leader feted in capital of former enemy

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - African leaders on Monday feted Somalia's new moderate Islamist president at a summit in Ethiopia, which chased him from power two years ago.

Sheikh Sharif Ahmed enjoyed a standing ovation from African Union leaders in Addis Ababa, two days after he was elected to lead the Horn of Africa nation in a parliamentary vote.

But in Somalia, militant Islamists declared jihad against Ahmed and mocked his trip to his former enemy, rallying their supporters for war against the new government.

Ahmed headed a sharia courts movement that brought some stability to Mogadishu and most of south Somalia in 2006, before Washington's main regional ally Ethiopia invaded to oust them.

Washington accused hardline members of the courts movement of having links with al Qaeda.

Ethiopia's army withdrew last month, clearing the way for Ahmed's election and raising tentative hopes for peace in the anarchic nation, torn by conflict for 18 years.

AU Commission chairman Jean Ping, opening the second day of the annual African Union summit, introduced Ahmed, saying "some shades of hope have appeared in Somalia". Ahmed smiled, waved and bowed in response to the applause.

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also welcomed Ahmed.

"All of us can take pleasure in the progress towards a peaceful settlement in Somalia," he said in his speech. "I count on your leadership and wise and visionary leadership."

MILITANT THREAT

Elected in a U.N.-brokered peace process in neighbouring Djibouti, Ahmed, 42, will fly to Mogadishu straight after the summit to put together a unity government and face the threat of militant Islamist insurgents led by the al Shabaab group, who control swathes of southern Somalia.

"We shall fight the so-called government of Sharif in every place!" Sheikh Hayakalah, who heads the Islamic court in the Shabaab-held port of Kismayu, told a crowd on Sunday.

Al Shabaab grew out of the armed wing of the sharia courts movement but later split with Ahmed.

"He is now with our number one enemy, Ethiopia, and calling for more support from non-believers. Imagine how Sharif, who was once our leader, deceived us and Islam," Hayakalah said.

The al Shabaab spokesman for Kismayu, Sheikh Hassan Yacqub, also attacked the new president.

"Sharif Ahmed is a traitor and we should fight him. Help us with your sons, weapons and wealth, so that we uproot this irreligious government of Sharif before it gets strong."

While Sharif has widespread support among many factions in Somalia, key to his success will be neutralising al Shabaab by defeating or isolating them or even bringing them into an alliance.

In Somalia there are rumours of splits within al Shabaab. Locals also say its popular support has waned due to hardline practices like prohibitions on watching foreign films, and executions and other public punishments.

Since an insurgency began at the start of 2007, some 17,400 Somali civilians have died in fighting, at least a million people have fled from Mogadishu, and a third of the population needs food aid in one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.

Shariif Time line: In 2006 he became the leader of ICU and he declare strugle against all enemies of Islam including Ethiopia, which is the number 1 enemy of somalia. Then he could not handle the hardship (kaneeco, daxan, cabsi and more) so he instead chose seek a conditional asylym form the US embassy in Nairobi. After that he went to Asmara to secure the leadership position of the movement. Once he he was elected for the head of the Re-Liberation movement he went to Jabouti to undermine the strugle against Ethiopia. We all know what next desire for the persidency of the country, shaving the beard, the biggest problem with him now is that he even bowed to please them. Alaahu Akbar, look the way he even walks.

 Dr Lam,
After a whirlwind romance on the opposition it is high time we drop the gauntlet and face Sharif politically. Atleast Maxad dheere yalaxow your distant cousin said " areey xisbi mucaraad oo siyaasi damaqraadii aa samehaa". What we need to do is form political parties to fight Sharif. Let men of understanding take heed.. Sharif will invite all groups in Somalia to join him in rebuilding our shattered nation, restore our pride and enlighten our youngsters. Those with ill ideas including al xaraam B52 will answer ya calls

Well said bro.... that is facts and that is correct deen

Sharif crossed the Islamic red line by dinning and dancing with enemy of Islam long time ago. He never contributed in tangible way in this jihad nor supported real Islamist stand from my knowledge. For three months he sat with American ambassador in Nairobi to chart his political life away from his former ICU group.

For saying prophet, saxaaba and other Muslims did sign with agreement with kufars.....is true word espoused for baadhil justification. Yes, they signed while their head was high not like what sharif it did.

In Medina his agreement with Makkah kufars was the interest of Islam but never join them in their laata wal cuzaa shirk worshipping business. What sharif did neither serve Islam nor further even the future of Islamic state. For Abu Sufyaan story is totally lie and deception the way wiifgarow put it. He never let them worship shirk while he has a power. He only told them as suuratal kaafiruun shows that each group worship their God. That was after laughable suggestion from Kufars to take turn of worshipping each God for one year.

For the story of salaaxuddiin……Salahuddeen has negotiated for military truce not taking orders from crusaders or approval of their way of life. His brother’s stand is not deen even though Wiifgarow tailored a little bit. What is deen what is written in Quran and sunnah. And they don’t condone what sharif did in seeking power

In summing up...there is different between navigation techniques written in Quran when you are strong/weak positions and complete prohibition of taking orders from gaalos or even considering their proposal in lieu of giving up some of your Islam.  What sharif did first in his acceptance speech was he praised Americans (that is xaraam and un-Islamic), then he issued yesterday his infamous call of attacking on alshabab. That makes him in the same column with Amhara lover.

Yes, it is Muslim brotherhood tarbiyah in which fail so far to produce one single Islamic state since their inception in 1918. They are in bed with dictators (daaquutis)

For Wiifgarow

Not only you are atheist ilaah xarriggiis ka furtay but hypocrate need to be tustataab. Do you think this forum contributors are fools who can't remember when you were asking Jannah for Americans and western gaalos. Or qaldaamiinta waa marfuucul qalam. Pity. Waar towbah dheh intaadan fiqi aqoon aad isku dhex tuuraysid.

Nin walba intuu cimaamad xirto ayuu fataawooyiin iska tuurayaa…..Ruwaybidhah waaxidis

Speaking about  the interest of the people of ogaden, a meaningful support  can only come from strong independent Somali government , a government that is inclusive supported and trusted  by its people, accepted in the international arena , not manipulated by any external force in any form ar shape. Every one is entitled to post his/her view and we all see this world in different ways , but commonsense is what we share when we decide to agree to disagree, otherwise the simplisity of the human mind that is easy to understand will loose its magic of knowing right from wrong, it is dangerous when one can not differ madness from sanity. The other day some one wrote Somalis do not know waht exactly they want, there is an element of truth about his comment, he was right.

 Wiigrow,
If I may, in the late eighties I had the honor of eavesdropping on a conversation between Bile Rafleh and some young students in Arabia. Bile, was probably on his last official trip in his capacity as a minister of the late Pres. Barre.
The young  students were part of the anti Barre forces of the late eighties, needless to say they were Ogaden. The students were yearning for the removal of Barre as was with the case for many Somalis at the time.

This what Bile has told them: No matter who's on the helm,we Ogadens  must be the fiercest defenders of Somali republic, must bring other Somali together when they disagree and stay neutral about internal politics.

Perhaps some should ponder upon what Bile was saying back then as it should resonate even today!

This is not to say of their are irrelevant. On the contrary, from them came Sayid Maxamed, perhaps the greatest Somali ever,Sheikh Cali suufi an Imam who enormously contributed to the propagation of diin in Somalia.

A lot has changed since the days of Ethiopian boots and the ramble in the jungle. By then, UIC and the boys were on the run, TFG was the sole entity, warlords were running the show, Amhara was providing the cover and the rest of us were marginalized.

Today, Amhara is defeated and was sent backing, TFG stopped on their tracks, their president toppled, their prime minister humbled, their organization diluted and neutralized, and above all, their authority weakened and marginalized. Today, warlords and TFG remnants are marginalized and the entire country is in Somali hands.

It is good not to know when you are beaten as did the boys on the ground, but its bad not to know when you beat others. You need to realize that TFG lost when their president was forced to walk away, you need to realize the they caved in and accepted defeat when they allowed to add 200+ united opposition to their already disgruntled parliament, you need to realize that a shift of power as taken place.

You need to see the bigger picture and seize the moment. You have a majority government that is led by your comrade, you have unmatched authority on the ground.

You only have to beat yourself my friend. I give it to you. Take it or leave it.

Its noteworthy to remember that the ICU came into being in order to unshackle the chains these men had on our society. They're still around dictating terms and conditions, this time with more power and influence, thanks to Ethiopian backing. What has changed since then?

As far as this visit is concerned, Somalis need to understand that there is no one to compete, no one to beat and above all, no one to succumb to except themselves. This is neither the battle of the DIINs nor a cross country w*r. It is all about unruly nation in ruins trying to come out of its own mess.

As person, Sheikh Shariif has the right to do be choosy and fussy. As a leader, he has to raise above personal pride and prejudice and bite the bullet. He is a leader of a country, a head of state and a representative of a nation at international level.  Whoever does not share their view is a traitor and must be fought. The noises about the visit of Sharif to Addis and welcome he received must be seen in its context because he is there to attend the AU meeting whose support recorgnition and support is crusual for his goverment. If anything his presence is embarrasment to Zenawi after sending thousands of his young men to die in Somalia to prevent the Shaikh and the Islamic Courts coming to power, he is forced to welcome him in their capital as a leader of Somalia and gets a standing ovation at the AU meeting. Let us look at the mirror, we are our own enemies. We should stop shopping for enemies to further our criminal agenda

 Gaadhaye

Your history needs a bit of brushing up. The most succesful Muslim leaders negotaited, compromised and dealt with their enemies. They signed accords and agreements. The first was of course our beloved prophet himself PBUH. He negotiated with abu sufian and allowed him to worship his gods right in the heart of mecca. He even said to the kaffirs `Who enters abu sufians house is safe'. Allah SWT confirmed to the prophet that his compromise was correct throught Surat Al-kafiroun. So here we had at sometime pagans worshipping their gods in their temples right next to muslims worshipping in mosques. That was the beauty of Islam and the beauty of our beloved prophet PBUH.

Salahaddin negotiated time and again with the crusaders. His brother Al Adel and the crusader leader Lionheart even became close friends. Marriage was offered.

So Sh Sharif is following a long and honorable Muslim tradition of negotiating with your enemy. May Allah protect him and guide him to save his people from misery.
Gaadh'haye @ 2/2/2009 9:24 AM EST
"He is now with our number one enemy, Ethiopia, and calling for more support from non-believers. Imagine how Sharif, who was once our leader, deceived us and Islam," Sheikh Hayakalah said.

Exactly these are my sentiments as well as many other honest Somalis.

He must be (if I am right) the first so-called Islamic Movement leader in modern Islamic history that crossed over to the enemy. In the past, Islamic movement leaders were either captured in battle and imprisoned, ex’ecuted, or fled but never compromised their ethos and values even though they were under extreme duress. Needless to say they never sold out and joined the enemy. Sayid Mohamed and Ahmed Gurey are such examples.

It is even said Sharief is the first to succumb- without that much of pressure on him- to the machinations of the enemy and become content with role of servant all in the hope of getting “recognition” and acceptance from the Kufaars.

This cowardice must’ve something to do with Ikhwan Muslimeen school of thought

fiqicigaal @ 2/2/2009 9:20 AM EST
There are two kinds of traitors in current Somalia. Those who facilitated and supported the invation of Somalia by the ethos. The other ones are those who will do every trick under the sun to undermine any peace initiative or a viable government that is inclusive and just. We are not looking for perfection, none of us is perfect, let us give peace a chance and why not support the Sharif and see how things unfold, then we can critisize or applaud. No way or my way is not an option any more, dadkaaga dhinac ka raac, yaadan dhumine dhinac ka raac.
wiifgarow @ 2/2/2009 9:20 AM EST
Good to see him walking tall and proud in Addis. Isalmist hardliners keep on saying he `changed' as that is somehow the worst insult on earth.

Read my lips: Change is good. Human beings change their views. Change won Obama the White House. It is really quite good stuff. You should try it sometime. My first suggestion: change from violemce to peace. And then for love's sake stop calling yourselves abu qumbuc banu qalac. Allah SWT will not give you extra points for having old Arabic tribal names. I am no alim but even I know this much. Oh and allah SWT most certainly will not you extra points for wearing Pathani surwaal kkamis. Allah SWT is not that superficial. He does not judge his slaves by their dress.

Shariifku waa nin marqaansan oo ay madax martay Madaxweynenimo.
Waxaa loo dhiibey awood uusan qaadi karin wax khibrad ahna u lahayn.

Waa nin deganaan u dhashay, laakiin aad moodid inuu durba ku soo khafiifayo siyaasada.
Wuxuu durba ka dhawaajiyey dagaal, iyo duulaan.

Shariifku waa nin caynkee ah?

Waa nin gaaban oo madow oo markasta ay cimaamad yari u saarnaan jirtey garabka, laakiin hada tuuray oo suudh xirtay.
Shariifku waa nin qunyar socod ah sida quraanjada, laakiin hada xawaareynaya.

Shariifku hadii uu iska ilaaliyo la taliyayaasha xun,waa nin sumcadiisii soo celin kara, taageerana ka heli kara Lamadage iyo asxaabtiisa.lol. Wayba u dhaarteen!!!

Shariifku hadii uu Al-shabaab ka badbaado waxaa looga baqayaa HG.

It is fair to say that it was right for Sharif not to sit in a meeting with Ethiopia ambassador in Djibouti there and then because Ethiopia invaded and was occupying Somali soil, there was no way he could have negotiated with the aggressor. Now that ethos were defeated and forced to leave our land , he is right to hold his head high and walk through Addis to present his programme to the AU and ask the rest of the world support for all those important issues that needs urgent attention, e.g. the humanitarian aid, loads of dollars to enable him and his government to run this country as smooth as they can, it will be tough though, but it is acheivable.

I remember vividly when c/lahi yusuf was president, sheekh shariif refused to sit in the hall in d'jibuti to sign a peace deal agreement wth the tfg coz the ethiopian ambassador to d'jibuti was present in the hall with IGAD and others and today sheekh sharrif is walking proudly in adis ababa. I am with the peace and as long he can bring peace to somalia am with him but he could have saved all those drama long ago if he knew he too would dine with mele zanawi same day. Never say Never sheekh shariif you never know what life could bring, but you are one CLEVER MAN! wish all somalis were like you DAWACO!! Peace&Love to all
