Reports: Shelling kills at least 30 in Somalia

Thursday, October 22, 2009

At least 30 people died and 70 were wounded in shelling on a marketplace in the Somali capital of Mogadishu Thursday, according to journalists and emergency services.

A local journalist called the rocket fire on Bakara market "unprecedented."

"This was the most brutal shelling," according to an ambulance service representative who said they had picked up 61 wounded, but expect the number to climb. Other victims were being brought to hospitals by family and friends.

The source of the shelling could not immediately be determined.

Journalists saw shell fire coming from AMISOM -- the African Union Mission in Somalia -- strongholds in a fortified district of the capital and from near the airport. AMISOM is the only force in the area believed to have the firepower capable of such an intense attack. However, AMISOM denied any involvement in the incident.

The African Union has a 3,400-member peacekeeping force in Somalia, made up of troops from Burundi and Uganda. It operates under a U.N. mandate to support Somalia's transitional federal government.

The peacekeeping force is charged with protecting key government and strategic installations in Mogadishu, including the port, airport and presidential palace. It is the de facto military force of the weak, transitional Somali government.

African Union forces have been battling an al Qaeda-linked Islamist militia in Somalia called Al-Shaabab.

The United States is supporting the Somali government's fight against the insurgents, including providing weapons to government forces. Al-Shaabab is on the U.S. list of terror organizations because of its ties to Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network.

The United States is concerned that Somalia's weak government could fall to the Islamist insurgency, as it did in 2006 before Ethiopian forces ousted the militants from power in early 2007. Ethiopia invaded Somalia with the support of Somalia's weak transitional government.

 Kucadaye,

Well said bro, I agree with you 100% on your disciplined principle of views on Somalia's solution. There is a Somali saying that " everyone gets satisfied from thirst only with their hands".

As you said, foreigners will never help unless one help themselves in the first place, it is typical of crocodile tears and empty empathy.

 Shanta,

What we have to show for more than a decade of 'international community's intervention? I would say Gloom and Doom!

Yes, the West paid for the cost of accomodation for hotels owned by Big Men in Nairobi and Djibouti and ton of Khat supplied at Imbaghetti by yours truly Shariif Xariif, a former Whole Sale Khat Dealer and the current Finance Minister, and entertainment provided by Siad Era Faniin who will sing for anyone who paid the bills.

But who were the Delegates who attended these so called Reconciliation and Peace Conferences? Chornically unemployed Diasporas Somalis who parked their families in Europe and North America, criminal Warlords, and surrogates of the international Poverty and Dependecny Industry, pausing as 'Civil Society'. There were not many credible Traditional Leaders present in these conferences. And even if they were present they were just a prop to provide legitimacy to the sham played again and again against the average Somali man, woman, and child. Somali people.

In contrast to the most recent of these Conferences in Djibouti, the Borama and Garowe conferences in the NorthWest and NorthEast respctively were led by real representatives of the clans in these regions.  There was no Ould Abdalla or another UN functionay whose career and continued employment depends on the continuation of our misery.

Shanta, I agree it is a challenge to convene a Real Pan-Somali Conference in Somalia but it is doable IF:
a) the neighbouring countries and the West give us a chance to tackle our differences and leave us alone;
b) Somaliland and Puntland host these Conferences and share their past experiences in Peace Making with their brothers and sisters in Central and South Regions; and
c) employed (and I emphasize 'employed'), ethical, patriotic Diapsora Somalis facilite such a conference by raising funds for it.

If Shariif Axmed takes the lead in advancing this formula he will be remebered as the Leader who saved Somalia from the brink of oblivion but if he continues in his current ways he will remembered who sold his soul and his country! The choice is his.

Ironically, Shanta, I believe if we wait for an internaional community solution led by the West and Ethiopia/Kenya/Uganda as foot soldiers we will not wait for a solution but we will wait for complete disappearance of our motherland from the map of nations. Not within 20 years but within less than five years!

 Con't
If Somalis are to be left alone, it will take centuries for us to form a perfect union once more. It was the international community which organized Arta and Imbaghati. It was the world that pushed and threatened the warlords to come together.  Are there any Somalis willing to participate nation building within the confinement of Somalia without any interference from the outside?

 kucadaye,
Once the existential threat is neutralized, the dominant clans in that area saw no need to further destabilize the respective regions by turning against one another like in Mogadishu.  Mind you, that both regions had a well respected leadership and most importantly a strong discipline among the rank and file, and years of preparation which facilitated the transition from military rule to civilian rule.

 Shanta,

I am glad you brought up 'Puntland' and 'Somaliland' and the relative peace they have been enjoying for the past decade. This support my thesis that if Somalis are left alone for a while they can solve their problems. Both Somaliland and Puntland were able to do so without any direct help from the 'international community'. It was a Somali-made grass-root traditional Peace Making. The peace makers were not shuttled to foreign capital and dines and chewed by the 'international community'. Caano iyo Barris ayaa loo soo kariyey!
The only help they got from the 'international community' they were left alone to iron out their local differences (which are real and do exist) and put together some sort of an skelton of governance.  The people appreciated it and by and large help sustain the peace.
