Ethiopia pulls out first troops from Somali capital

Tuesday, January 13, 2009
MOGADISHU (AFP) — Ethiopian forces pulled out Tuesday from two bases in northern Mogadishu in their first withdrawal from the lawless Somali capital since rolling into the seaside city two years ago.

Farah Abdi Warsame, a resident said: "It is a happy day today to see the area for the first time in two years without the Ethiopian forces. We hope the rest will leave the country."

Hundreds of residents rushed to see the empty camps in Yakshid district, which alongside other Mogadishu neighbourhoods have seen some of the worst violence between Islamist insurgents and the forces.

"The Ethiopian forces withdrew from key positions in northern Mogadishu overnight and our fighters took control of the areas in order to avoid a power vacuum," added Sheikh Hassan Osman, an Islamist official.

Ethiopia announced its withdrawal in November, sparking concerns of a security vacuum in the war-ravaged country where an African Union force has been unable to halt the violence and insurgents have retaken many

regions.

The ill-equipped and under-funded AU force expected to eventually number 8,000 soldiers currently comprises only 3,400 troops from Uganda and Burundi.

Addis Ababa sent its forces into Somalia in late 2006 to back an embattled interim government against an Islamist movement that had gained control of swathes of territory in south and central Somalia.

But the ouster of the Islamists triggered relentless fighting that has killed thousands of civilians and displaced hundreds of thousands others.

The United Nations top envoy to Somalia Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah urged hardline Islamists who had pegged their participitation in peace talks on the Ethiopian withdrawal to end fighting.

"Today the Ethiopians have respected their commitment," Ould-Abdallah said in a statement.

"The ball is now in the court of the Somalis, particularly those who said they were only fighting against the Ethiopian forces, to stop the senseless killings and violence."

Moderate Islamists had signed a deal with the transitional government for a gradual withdrawal of Ethiopian troops, a power-sharing and a ceasefire agreement under UN-mediated talks.

You mean Ahmed Abdisailan owns Shabeele hoose!.
hymohamed @ 1/13/2009 4:56 PM EST
 Carros,
You have forgotten who owns Shabelle.   It is owned by the traitor TFG Information Minister.   Do you think I will read what is posted there now?    I am not that fool.

I won't go into the details of that other item that I have mentioned but there could be an islamist coming as part of the family.  We hope views will change when that man takes residence home but of course he won't argue with "Soddoh"...LOOOOOOOOOOOL

abdiaziz2007 @ 1/13/2009 3:50 PM EST

 Sista Caraweelos,
I like the humour you put in your comments.  Look I am not pessimists and always hope the best for all of us; however, I despise the foreigners who are meddling in our internal affairs.   The Kaaraan incident is a fight between an Islamic group and a TFG soldiers and many young kids lost their lives in a Koranic school after stray shell fell on the school.  I and you and every one should regret that incident and pray for their well-being.  Since you run an NGO, you should try to provide some help.

I do not buy one bit Ethios ayaa xaflad loo sameeyey.   The assault on their bases yesterday have never been seen before.  After they launched their attack on the civilian population, a strategic decision was to give them a passage to alleviate the suffering of our people.  If they throw a little party amongst themselves and the stooges after this decision, who cares.  We know and they know that they have been forced to flee and that is what matters.  I cannot imagine there are people who are oblivion to this truth.  You know what Caro, your daughter, and I know you have a daughter, will be proud of this Ethios defeat.   History will show how we forced them out and it is not over yet.   I have already set my eyes on Addis.  We should restore the 1st Islamic Khalifate in Africa that was established in that town Insha-Allah.

Hymohamed, waxaan rajeynaayey waqtigaan inaad saaxiga keento. Yaa wax laga xoreeyay, bal waxaad ku hadleyso arag. Niman ku leh waan idinka tagnay aa xaflad loo dhigay ayaad leedahay mujaahadiin baa wax ka xoreeyay, mujahadiin kusheega waxay dhulka dhiigooda ku dhameeyeen waa Soomaali. Haddana isku diyaari dhiig kale oo badan oo xarbul xoriya ah, yaaba is gaaray Shalay Guriceel maantana Karaan, berina sug.

 same_raadshe,
Those who liberated the country are those in the resistance movements.  I will not go into details who they are and I am not worrying about who is going to lead provided that they come up a unified front and consensus.  We should all have a say in our country's future and hope the best.

sonofsomalia,
The resistance factions that you mentioned were attacking the Ethios even yesterday.   We can all hypothesize whether it is due to Obama cutting the funds or McCain losing the election but one thing is sure and that is if there were no resistance to Ethios, they would have stayed in Somalia for generations to come and convinced themselves that their long held legend to have access to the Indian ocean was realized.  Well, that legend was nullified by the men and women in these movements.  I don't believe the game is over yet and those who orchestrated the invasion are coming up other schemes also.   I am holding my celebration at this point but I am glad that h'ated enemy is leaving while coming under the resistance's fire.

What difference will it make if the Ethiopians leave?

They have been killing our people and destroying our country for the last two years, just like we were doing in the previous 16 years?

When they leave, they will just pass the baton to us so that we can carry on from where we left off last time.

The only difference being, this time, there will be more divisions, more weaponry and fire power, thanks to them.

camalow @ 1/13/2009 12:44 PM EST
THANK YOU ETHIOPIA FOR ALL YOUR SACRIFICES AND YOU DID FOR THE NON MOORYAANS WE REALLY APPRECIATE BUT YOU LEFT INDHAGULUUS ALIVE I DONT KNOW WHY.
Caraweelos @ 1/13/2009 12:25 PM EST
Indhacade had moved in one of the military compunds, since he was homeless for a while and he is not aiming like Cirfo to became a mayor of Guriceel, he still thinks that he is de facto leader of Lower Shabeele.
sonofsomalia @ 1/13/2009 10:53 AM EST
 hymohamed

What resilience, for the last 2 years there was nothing more than bombing and displacement. Ethiopia leaves because BUSH leaves office, and so no more funding. If Mcain won trust me, your resilience would be going on for another 4 to 8 years.
same_raadshe @ 1/13/2009 10:47 AM EST
hymohamed... you are right its about time, those who liberated the country run
its about time we have seinsible people run, you are right again taht Ethopia had been defeated in somalia though that was not the cause of thier leving somalia.

but i ahve question?

who liberated us i know for a fact it was not indha ade his Mooryaans nor was it Sheekh Aweys when was the last time we heard alshabaab attaking ethopians they are too busy killing other somalis or digging graves.

brother let you head think,,,,,
hymohamed @ 1/13/2009 10:44 AM EST
 habe==>have
hymohamed @ 1/13/2009 10:35 AM EST
Ethiopia did not leave its own terms but suffered a crushing and humiliating defeat.  If it comes back, it knows what it is waiting for her.     I see the beginning of the end of the Amhara and Tigrayan Christian dynasty in Ethios.  Every oppressed people in Ethiopia habe taken notice the resilience, bravery, and the determination of the Somali people.

To the Somalis, it is high time that those who liberated the country, run the it during the transitional period.
cali @ 1/13/2009 10:25 AM EST
this is joke, ethiopia isn't gonna leave that easy.
they might change the stragy and make the somalis
fight each other.
same_raadshe @ 1/13/2009 9:57 AM EST
As soon as the Filthy Ethopians left, we See Indha Ade and His Mooryaans trying to claim they evicted the Ethopians....

Untill Indha Ade and his like are about there will be no peace in somali
etsero @ 1/13/2009 9:36 AM EST
Ethiopians can leave Somalia because they can come back any time they want.
It happens that the mortal enemies of Ethiopia don't like their withdrawal because they have lost an enemy to fight.
Who will they fight now ? Nobody other than Somalis.

if fighting comes.  new alliances shall be made and the one with the most support shall rule.
som @ 1/13/2009 9:17 AM EST
When they say they are leaving they bring more and more soldiers. Remember when they first came they said they will leave within 7days.
etsero @ 1/13/2009 9:17 AM EST
Now that Ethiopians are leaving Somalia territory, we wait what Somali leaders are able to do for reconciliation and reconstruction of Somalia.
Will clans, warlords, islamics begin to fight each other as usual ?
This is the last opportunity to save Somalia.

Ethiopia is leaving, and that’s good news, but who will stop all Alxaaraams and worlords. Who can tell them, it’s time to step a side like Cabdulahi Yusuf and accept the rule of law, and creation of Somali functioning state. Its easy to build national government if Southerns learn how to negotiate peacefully. There no alternative but negotiate worthless warlords like Indha- Cadde and his likes has no place in future leaders. They are done, can’t they se?
