| Prof. Ahmed I. Samatar, Seattle, WA |
SEATTLE (HOL) - A well-known Somali professor was in Seattle on Saturday, July 19, giving the keynote address at an event organized by local citizens.
Prof. Ahmed I. Samatar, Dean of the Institute for Global Citizenship at Macalester College in Minnesota, spoke to a sizeable crowd of Somalis at the Radisson Hotel on International Blvd., where organizers served light snacks and the audience patiently waited for a fantastic speech.
Abdulkadir Aden “Jangeli,” writer of the famed play – “Who Spoiled the Ethiopian Dreams?” – and one of the event’s organizers, offered opening words about the importance of a community gathering where Somalis engaged in civil debate about serious matters here, and at home.
Entitled, “Reflections on Leadership in Somali Post-Colonial Context,” Prof. Samatar’s speech gravitated around the concept of leadership in African, and in particular Somali, studies.
One of the questions posed – who can be a leader? – garnered a list of qualities for leadership that did not include the clan identity or regional background of the Somali candidate – an anomaly, given the clan-based structure of the Western-backed Somali Transitional Government (TFG) in Mogadishu today.
“A candidate for leadership must have vision,” Prof. Samatar said, speaking eloquently in the Somali language to an audience of natives.

| Abdulkadir Aden “Jangeli,” |
He described a set of criteria for Somali leaders, including honesty, charisma and remarkable capabilities with insightful knowledge of the country’s past and present, so future generations could be safe from today’s misery.
Somali scholars ‘neglected’ their role, while the Horn of Africa nation’s bureaucrats were a ‘failure’ and some even ‘joined the war,’ Prof. Samatar said in describing structural causes that led to the collapse of the Somali nation-state in 1991.
He spoke about the prospects of lasting in Somalia after the TFG and the opposition group Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia (ARS) signed the Djibouti Agreement on June 9, which called for a ceasefire and the withdrawal of Ethiopian troops from Somalia after UN peacekeepers are deployed.
But Prof. Samatar, who had a copy of the Agreement in hand, said there are some clauses in the Agreement that “must be clarified,” and that the clause dealing with the withdrawal of Ethiopian forces is “not clear.”
The well-organized event ended with audience members posing questions to the visiting professor, who gladly offered scholarly responses.
Mr. Jangeli, who wanted to extend credit to fellow organizers Ali Roble and Ali Ismail, said the group wanted to bring together members of Seattle’s Somali community and offer an opportunity where everyone can engage in open debate.
Prof. Samatar, who has lectured in California, The Hague and was scheduled to speak in Toronto over the weekend, stopped in Seattle as part of his lecture tour after receiving an invite from Mr. Jangeli and his partners.
“As Somalis, cannot continue to rely on individuals to do everything,” Jangeli said. “We must stand and work together collectively for the benefit of everyone.”
soomaaliya dowlad uma baahna ee waxay u baahan tahay aqoon looga hortago dhaqanka carabta, waayo waxa ay maanta soomaali tahay waxaa sabab u ah dhaqan laga soo guuriyey carabta oo aynu ka dhigannay astaan horumara.
Soomaali waxay u baahan tahay dad aqoon leh oo dadka u kala sheega waxa ay ku kala duwan yihiin CARAB iyo ISLAAM. soomaalida waxaa ay aaminsan tahay dhaqan carbeed oo ay u haystaan inay tahay DIIN ISLAAM

ARAWELLO 10 YOU ARE ALWAYS NEGATIVE,NEGATIVITY & ENVY HAS TAKEN OVER YOU, SO DON,T ENVY THE PROFESSOR IF YOU DO SO ,,THEN SWALLOW SLOWLY A VERY SHARP RAZOR BLADE

If you read my comments before you'll know that I don't support the division!!!!Anyway I am not from the North either, come on be creative!!!!
I agree alot of people would que for H A Samatar but i dont agree that we elect him. Since you are not from the south, i see why you dont like the Professor. He is from the North but does not support your separatist idealogy.
Nomadic1 - I would happily que for hassan adan samatar rather maybe we should elect him instead!!!!!
Dowlad, apology accepted but I am not reer koonfureed and I don't like the Samatars either.
Gaadhka fair enough, however, the messenger comes first, and it really decides whether I want to listen to the messege or not. In this case I don't sorry about this!!!! the prof may have wealth of knowledge that I may or may not want to listen to in a different context, but in the Somali context he is certainly not objective!!!!

The theme of this lecture was about “Reflections on Leadership in Somali Post-Colonial Context.” The professor touched on, among other things, the prerequisites for leadership in Somalia. Something that we are in short supply, critically.
“He described a set of criteria for Somali leaders, including honesty, charisma and remarkable capabilities with insightful knowledge of the country’s past and present, so future generations could be safe from today’s misery” summarized HOL.
I want to know, which part of his criteria for leadership, do you have argument with?
For those of you who are violently attacking the credibility of this erudite scholar, why not attack the message instead and refute what the Proff. has short-listed as prerequisite for leadership?
Please comment on the message and NOT on the messenger.

To sum up professor Samatars character..Simple,Wise,Tolerant,Brave and an indomitable lion for the oppressed somalis both at home and abroad. All his good qualities are lacking in the CV of any of the bloody TFG robbers.Let those who envy the Professor slowly swallow a very sharp razor blade.
You need to identify and accept you weaknesses and shortcomings before you can solve anything. Most Somalis are uneducated nomads, they are hungry, unemployed, ungovernable. That is the reality weather we like it or not.
Qayaasye, if you disagree with the professor or what i just said, google "Somalia" and see it for yourself brother.

Arrawello
This report is done by somebody by the name, Yusuf Mahamud. His choice of words have nothing to do with the professor. If you want to get the full picture, appreciate the fact that Mr Samatar constantly travels across continents raise awareness and bring togetherness among Somalis. We need more people like him.

Borofesar Samatar waxaan ku ammaanayaa dedaalka uu ugu jiro difaacidda midnimada dalka soomaaliyeed. Dhabnimadii waa muwaadin soomaaliyeed oo u taagan kaalintii kaga aaddanayd ilaalinta midnimada dalkiisa hooyo.
Laakiin waxaan borofesarka ku dhaliilayaa inuu ka hor yimi dawladda ku meel gaarka ah. Waxaad mooddaa inuu borofesarku ku dhacay debinkii ey dad kaloo soomaaliyeed ku dheceen, debinkaas oo ah: (dawladda ku meel gaarka ahi waa inaaney wax ceeb ah lahayn). Aragtida noocaas ahi waa mid aad iyo aad u qaldan, maxaa yeelay soomaaliya waa meel dagaal sokeeye ka socdey muddo dheer halkaasoo la burburiyey dhammaan qaabdhismeedkii dawladeed oo qabqablayaal ey taladii dalka la wareegeen. Haddaba haddii la rabo in dawladdii soomaaliyeed dib loogu soo yagleelo, ma dhici karto in lagu bilaabo dawlad ka kooban mas'uuliyiin wada xul ah oo xilka loo dhiibey u wada qalma. Waxaa habboonayd in borofesarku xaqiiqadaas, waa ogyahaye, aanu iska indhatirin.

Naarta &~ Arraweelo I agree with you in every sense of the word...sawiro...I actually saw this sad story talking once, not only he is full of himself as he had the audacity to go endlessly on... on.... on.... and on about how intelligent he is. He made one flip only though, he said that he has been to all sorts of peace deals that failed and that he had offered all sort of advices as he usually does to TNG, UIC,......etc!!! and I wondered could the failings have anything to do with him and his advice!!!??? Apparently he disagrees with everyone, the TNG, the UIC, the...the...Puntland,...the Somaliland...the...the...the TFG....they are not all to his standards....and has something to say about everyone an d anyone...Apparently we should accept his line of thinking because as he refers to himself he is an intellect.....and a scientist!!!!! ???

God Bless Somalia and our patriots the Samatar brothers Ahmed and Abdi. We are proud of them, they are patriots, well educated, visionary, good leaders. Somalia need professors like them clean from corruption and clan mentality. God Bless their parents who nurtured them with the love for the Somali people. Nargale I don't agree with you Prof. Samatar and Mr. Jangeli are patriots, intellectuals, well known and respected by almost all Somalis.

Ozman,
Tuugta ayaga la isku daaya, hal hal ayay iskugu xidido siibayaan, waana mida hadda socoto inkastoo shacab masakiin ah ay ku kor dagaalamayaan.

I think the cause of Somali instability is cultural, that's is, we have been transmitting down from generation to the next, a culture of death, dishonesty. Out culture harbors thug-hood. Think for a moment, Said Barre was a thug, the TFG is led by thugs, Punland is run by thug, so is Somaliland. Now think again, about Al-shabaab and their allies, another thug club, and this club has actually raise the bar, they are more of like fascists. Now, tell me, how we are going to solve our problems when our leadership are bunch of thug?
Stop hating and start participating, we got ignorance in all of Somalia, but at least us Somalilanders try and solve it. A few weeks ago just as you Somalilanders argued and nearly set hargeisa on fire because a well digging rig was being moved from one tribal city to another. Now to solve the problem we all invested in Solar powered wells. Thus there has been an initiation of digging five wells so people wont fight.
You people need to do same thing, stop fighting and start thinking.
Peace out from a Somali brother that wishes u well
When are you South Somalis ever gonna unite? I mean so what if this man has Aspiration for future leadership, I'll tell you that he's probably better suited than the diaper wearing president South Somalia got or the so called "religious leaders" that claim to unite all 5 corners of Somalia yet keep silent when Djibouti is attacked by Eritrea cause Eritrea backs the Moryan tribe.
Wake up South Somalia, you need a man with broad thinking to lead you rather than a man of your qabiil
Well, the professor has shown quite a number of times 1)his visionary leadership skills. 2)his patriotic nature complexed with nationalism..3)Always on a mission to the tribal gangs and supporters of failed amxaaro regime that nothing is better than being yourself than dividing somalia for the sole of keeping your clan on boat..4)As someone has said, the professor should not always criticise the failed TFG, because they have failed themselves how can they be blamed when they ruin the whole nation.
"The well-organized event ended with audience members posing questions to the visiting professor, who gladly offered scholarly responses."
"“A candidate for leadership must have vision,” Prof. Samatar said, speaking eloquently in the Somali language to an audience of natives."
This is overly rated praise, I can't comprehend why this professor is so full of himself and the grandiosity he displays is nauseating. Since when speaking well your own mother tongue language had became something amazing.
According to Jengeli and his partners (I am speechless). Lol!!! Nargale I agree with you.
Sickandrot What is wrong with having Political Ambition? People who are much less worthy of having government positions are in the TFG (TUUG, AND FULE, GANGS) now. Where are the Educated individuals from the South?
I have seen the professor speaking about Somalia many times before. I don't doubt about his nationalism, but the problem with him is more critisism than solution. I hope the professor outlines the solutions of our seemingly unsolvable problems next time.
How many wells did these two guys dig in the villages where they were born in.
Melez Zenawi fought for his people and he gave them Somalia. A bargain price deal.
The professor for nothing and against everything!
Well, having Dr in front of your name does not make you visionary and leader, its your actions and what you stand for. This professor is very good at being against TFG stooges and I applaud that, but if you follow his argument, it is very hard to understand what he wants.
I think, he has political ambition in Somalia and this platform is just launching bid for his future agenda. He talks like "all knowing" and as if he has the solution in his hand. As i have been told, he is one of the so called Somali educators who spend much time at the State Department competing to convey a message of contradiction which the state department rightly concluded, perhaps "there is no Somali Karzai" in America and decided to go local. TFG will go, and genuine less educators won't be the replacement local freedom fighters is the way to go
keep dreaming professor!!
Thank you professor Ahmed I Samatar and Mr. Jangeli for your efforts to educate and bring together the Somali people and creating awareness about the Somali plight in the global arena. We will rememeber you professor for your words of wisdom and persuation of unity among the natives of Somalia. May Allah help us do the righteous and guide us into the right path so that we dwell in justice, peace, love, and unity and to enter jannah in the hereafter amiin.
Great Job Mr. Jangeli and to the Somali Community in Seattle.
Excelent peace of work and effort. Somalis should mobalise themselves and educate each other. we also need to learn how to seek knowledge and good things. If this was a concert for the other Samatar (Hassan), people would have been queing and perhaprs paying more attension.
