UN Somalia condemns the brutal murder of Osman Ali Ahmed,

Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) – SOMALIA

Statement attributable to Mark Bowden, United Nations Resident and Humanitarian

Coordinator for Somalia

Monday, July 07, 2008

Nairobi, The United Nations in Somalia condemns in the strongest possible terms the brutal murder Sunday night of Osman Ali Ahmed, Officer in Charge of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in Mogadishu.

Osman Ali Ahmed, a Somali national, was shot by unidentified gunmen as he, together with his son and brother, left the mosque after prayers. He died on his way to the hospital. His brother was also shot and seriously wounded in the attack.

“Osman Ali Ahmed was a highly respected UNDP staff member who had performed his duties with great courage and commitment over the past 14 years. Our condolences and profound sympathy goes to the family and loved ones of Osman Ali Ahmed and our thoughts and prayers to the family of his brother”, said the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, Mark Bowden. He added: “If this is indeed another example of a targeted killing of UN and non-UN humanitarian and development workers in Somalia, it is particularly outrageous and worrying at this critical time, when the need for humanitarian assistance is rapidly increasing.”

The United Nations is urgently taking measures to ensure the protection of staff working in Somalia and minimize their exposure to risk while at the same time maximizing the effectiveness of vital humanitarian work. These measures would involve prioritization of essential operations. “The humanitarian situation in Somalia is such that we must continue our work to save lives and alleviate human suffering. While we explore various ways of ensuring staff security, it is clear that the ultimate protection comes from the Somali people and communities themselves”, said Mark Bowden.

“We depend on the Somali people to assist us in getting the humanitarian assistance through. We know that the Somali communities have been very supportive of our work in the past. We now ask them to redouble their efforts to provide an environment in which aid and services can be delivered”.

Another disgraceful attempt to distort the facts, the fact is that Somalia is under Ethiopian illegal occupation and Somali people are legitimately and successfully resisting. The other undisputed fact is that resistance fighters have never harmed aid workers, foreign or local. The resistance have told everyone that they welcome the aid workers who help Somali people. To demonstrate their point they brought three foreign aid workers to safety from Hudur. It is also a fact that the office of UB WFP was raided by TFG warlords. In addition the Mayor of Mogadishu , his deputies, the head of TFG warlords Abdulahi Yusuf and many other warlords have threatened the aid workers and accused them of imaginary crimes. The bottom line is that warlords want to steal the food donated to the hungry people and this brother was honest enought and brave enough to refuse to succumb to their pressure that is why warlord TFG eliminated him. The UN and other international countries must launch independent investigation and punish those responsible.
somalipeace10 @ 7/8/2008 2:31 PM EST
The time to spread false propaganda in defense of the warlords is over, could you mention one religious man that the resistance killed? We all know that TFG war dogs and the occupation are out there to kill Somali intellectuals, religious people and anyone who could oppose the sinister plan of the occupation. Luckily Somali people successfully defended themselves from the occupation and its warlord stooges.
somalipeace10 @ 7/8/2008 2:23 PM EST
The resistance fighters have never advocated for harming aid workers. However , they hunt down the occupation forces and whoever works with them No one can conceal the obvious crimes of the warlords. As I have repeated many times, the resistance fighters who a very good working relation wit the everyone who helps Somali people and will fight the occupation.

So my fellow country men, you can’t deny the facts as they are! One day calling anyone who disagrees with you a traitor/kufar, and the very next day distancing yourselves from the early remarks that seemed to have encouraged many serial assassins to perform their rituals. I wonder what the Quran says about Personal Accountability and Conduct.
shanta @ 7/8/2008 10:49 AM EST
It’s a fact, when notable religious figures were being eliminated for condemning the latest aggression committed by TFG/Al-Haram. Al-Haram took it personal and ordered this kind of elimination to be performed, hoping to erase any doubts in the public minds or to curtail moderate and respectable voices to offer another perspective the claims made by Al-Haram Inc.
shanta @ 7/8/2008 10:29 AM EST
In mist of growing concern among a wary populace molested by both sides-Al Haram understands that; it too is fast becoming equivalent to the warlords. However, this is anything but a deliberate attempt to save face in the public relation’s campaign performed by the ill-informed and suppressed Mukhtar. How could they say that they are not responsible- when all along they have been preaching and instigating this kind of elimination?  Al-Haram has created and influenced many youths, who seem to take matters into their hands in effort to help the organization’s success.

"All the Mujahedeen (fighters) are not behind his (Osman Ali's) killing and it is not becoming of them to kill important persons who help the Somali people on whose behalf we are fighting but the enemy of Allah (Ethiopia) are behind his killing," Muqtar Robow Abu Mansuur, spokesman for Al-shabaab Islamist movement told reports in a telephone press conference.

shanta @ 7/8/2008 9:11 AM EST
I’m happy to be called Kufar by the “Muslim Since 2006 Group” or should I say the Neo-Islamist!
somalipeace10 @ 7/8/2008 4:11 AM EST
It is timely to tell the whole world that this innocent man who was helping vulnerable Somali people was killed most probably by TFG wardogs in collaboration with the occupation. We all remember that the office of WFP was raided by the TFG warlords and kidnapped the the head of the agency in Mogadishu. I think it is obvious beyond any doubt who carried out this heinous crime. The international community must realize that these warlord criminals are not part of the solution but  the problem and should be dealt with accordingly.

To: HOL, this is a somali website that millions of somalies arround the world come and read your articles and exchange their comments. However reasonly this place it seems us ch'unky place and some people are o'ffended including me. My point is for those of you who are adminstraters the system needs to be upgraded and set some rules what to post and what not to post and to look people who are h;arrasing&d'iscriminating and in'sulting other people based of their own agenda. If this is what you want to be your Website than millions of people will leave and eventually will turn down and find better places to express their thoughts with dignity and respect. i would suggest you do it something as soon as possible. It is your interest and as a readers we pay attention to our blogs

Maybe you should try to be a little physical and do some karbaashing.  This might work as we have seen in the past during ICU karbaash against the Mogadishu warlords.
mustafa-ii @ 7/7/2008 10:27 PM EST
Somalipeace10, you got alot of patience trying to educate qoom Ayaan Hirsi/aka dabadhilif kids here.
mustafa-ii @ 7/7/2008 10:09 PM EST
Allaha unaxariisto our brother Osman.  Such gruesome murders only stopped during the ICU rule.  As we know these killings flourished during the warlord era.  only the liberation of our land from the Ethio occupation and their warlord prostitues can end this ugly crime.
somalipeace10 @ 7/7/2008 7:41 PM EST
It is amazing to see occupation apologists and clan loyalists defending the obvious crimes of the occupation and TFG warlord thugs. Last week the resistance fighters saved three foreign aid workers from Hudur from the warlord militia, and in all other regions where resistance control aid workers work freely by the aid workers' own admission. The TFG warlords are so corrupt they want to control all aid money and food and that is probably their evil motivation to kill this innocent women. Warlord Yusuf admitted that aid workers work outside their control and it may be an attempt to coerce the aid agencies to cooperate with the TFG warlords.
shanta @ 7/7/2008 6:05 PM EST
Would the Real Al-Haram supporters stand up and take credit for this termination? It wasn’t me type of defense will not work, knowing you have been into this kind of business since 1995. After all, this is in your decree in creating a different kind of society: eliminate any educated people (regardless of clan affiliation) because they represent a present and clear danger to our system of governance-the continuance of Clan Occupation Regime.

Balaha bala blahaaa haaa. Thats all you said.
somalipeace10 @ 7/7/2008 4:13 PM EST
I think that anyone who follows Somali affairs knows two things; first, that the resistance do not target the aid workers , religious people and intellectuals, however, those who serve the occupation are legitimate targets.Second, the TFG warlords and the Ethiopian occupation have been targeting intellectuals, doctors, aid workers and religious people, we all remember that Ethiopian occupation forces slaughtered religious leaders in Mogadishu. We also now that TFG warlords have forwarded threats to the UN workers. It is on the record that Abdulahi Yusuf, MOhamed Dhere and many other TFG warlords threatened aid workers, we all remember warlord Abdulahi Yusuf insulting American aid worker. In all the regions where resistance are in charge no aid workers are harmed, we all know that recently resistance fighters brought to safety three foreign aid workers.

 Xiinfiniin,

Thank you for realising that those who killed the UNDP officer are sub-humans.
simbe @ 7/7/2008 2:16 PM EST
Maalin walba yaan lagu qaraaban Amharo ayaa nasoo weerartay oo wadata Amharo lovers, all Somali territory is a targit. you know thats not true, maa la weeraro Galkacyo, Bosaaso, Hargeysa or Berbera. The soutern people must clean their doorsteps or let some else do for them, because it stinks too much. We other Somalis are dead tyred the problem of the South: killings, alqaida style attacs, civilian displacement and terrorising them, bringing new worlords allmost one in month etc etc. You knew we can bringback our nationhood, if we clean upp the southern problem and Amharada aad ku digridaan inay na soowerartay will leave for good but you are leting her to stay. many people here seems to have a monkey brain. What ever you tell them they are DHAGAX TOOBIN SAAR EE DHUUQ.
xinfiniin @ 7/7/2008 1:31 PM EST
He was killed by sub human tigreys..Somali liberators will avenge his death.
momo519 @ 7/7/2008 1:01 PM EST
It has been a trademark for Islmic extremists to bomb schools and kill teachers in Afghanistan. It has been their trademark to kill UN personnel in Iraq. And now, they are doing it in Somalia. That is the sad part.
almansoor @ 7/7/2008 12:54 PM EST
there is no need to blame. i am demanding the islamic courts and alshabab to take a tangible measure over this issue, we know who is behind this murder.
we all know that there are ununiformed individuals of somalis who were sent by General Gabre to violate and create choas in the country as to not gotten any stabilization and cessation in the country.
those mercenaries would be caputured.
who thinks that islamist behind of this brutal action? no one, is my answer.
coz u knew when they tookover HUDUR they suddenly released the aid workers, so take this example and dont say some thing else ever them.
Arraweelo10 @ 7/7/2008 12:38 PM EST
(allah kuu naxariisto)RIP brother Osman and it is saddening to see Somali officials getting killed by Al-haram assa'ssins. District ofiicers, Aid officers, Doctors, Nurses, Mosque imam's and many other civilians had been the target of the dark underground criminal enterprise.
nomadic1 @ 7/7/2008 12:02 PM EST
Slaughtering non govermental officials is totally unacceptable. How can we help our people if we are slaughtering those that stood up for us at these very difficult circumstances. It is the dream of every Somali including myself to go back to our country and rebuild. If those back home are slaughtering their saviours, then we are all doomed. Very very sad indeed.
