Somali leader unhurt in mortar attack on residence

MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf escaped unhurt from a mortar attack by Islamist insurgents on his official residence in Mogadishu, his spokesman said.

The interim government and its Ethiopian allies are battling gunmen loyal to an Islamist movement that ruled Mogadishu and much of southern Somalia for six months in 2006 before being ousted by the allied forces.

"The president was at the palace when several mortars landed near the house. The president is safe," said spokesman Hussein Mohamud Hubsired.

"Al-Shabab, which is linked to al Qaeda, was responsible for this attack targeting the president," he told Reuters.

Al-Shabab, which opposes the presence of foreign troops on Somali soil, has been waging an Iraq-style insurgency.

The attack took place hours after Yusuf arrived in the coastal capital from a trip abroad for medical treatment.

The 73-year-old, who had a liver transplant nearly 14 years ago, left Somalia on January 4, a month after a chest illness sparked a health scare.

Spokesman Hubsired said Yusuf's main priority was to "hasten the government's works" and to continue reconciliation efforts to establish lasting peace.

A local human rights group said on Saturday that nearly 292 civilians were killed and 385 wounded in Mogadishu last month alone.

The chairman of the Elman Peace and Human Rights Organisation, Sudan Ali Ahmed, estimated that 2 million Somalis had fled their homes in the capital since January 2007.

Insurgents have carried out bombings and grenade attacks, drawing retaliatory gunfire from allied Somali-Ethiopian troops.

The United Nations says Somalia is the world's most pressing humanitarian crisis.

Ahmed, speaking to Reuters, accused the international community of paying no attention to abuses in the Horn of Africa country, which spiralled into chaos when warlords toppled dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991.

"We can call what is happening in Somalia genocide. The international community ignores the human rights breaches in the country," Ahmed said by telephone.

"The world should focus on Somalia more because the population is more vulnerable than ever before and all war crimes in the country must be tried in an international criminal court."

For HOL removing my strong words won't stop our stand against this Amhara stooge. Keep censoring me....after all, your editorial policy if you have any or weak aritcles are very selective/one sided. That is why we have to walk tight rope all the time.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion-what I said to you was that there is no need to personalize this forum, but everything else is open for discussion except profanities. You don’t accept it, but it was a suggestion. There are people that I don’t read there comments who are offensive in nature-but the ones I read and respond to, are normally from decent people, such as yourself-just because someone lowers their standards doesn’t mean you have to lower yours!
Gaadh-haye @ 2/18/2008 2:21 PM EST
I wonder why Shanta and & co are not holding fellow clansmen to certain standard of ethics here. It is pick and choose. This man, Somaliunity, is not restrained while we are badmouthed!

Some people are so faithless, that one minute they will be harrasing you that you got no faith and another minute they interfere Allah's work (who will be dead or alive).

TO: HOL, Please observe the ethical standards of the people posting comments on this website. Some people are trying to discredit other groups while they pretending that they come from or support that side - like the person called himself Somali-unity. See what he/she is talking. Bad clanish naming, like the person called his/herself Raweelo.
People should stay standard. Or remove their comments from this public site

Brain dead I agree after many yrs of eating chad they have no clue
what is happening. Yey is on his last leg, his healty is skaky
and he has been holed up two weeks in Adis and pressured by his  Ethiopian
masters to relinquish power. As soon he vacate Villa Somalia he is going
Baidowa to give his last farewell speech like Gedi.
the real test is the pro tfg group are they still support the so call gov?
fiqicigaal @ 2/17/2008 3:17 PM EST
Gaadh-haye, you couldn't have said it better and i agree with you 100% . The fact of the matter is nothing can be compared to the magnitude of the atrocities on innocent somalis in ogaden and in southern somalia by an enemy who is on a mission to uproot somalis from their settlements and then colonise the rest of the nation with the blessing of America and the support of brain dead somali warlords who are blinded by greed and ignorance not to mention their deep rooted clan mentality

What is the good news? Who is the new replacement of Yusuf

his last visit to the palace, they should have let him rest
in peace. Last week Meles and US ambassador to Ethiopia had meet
Yusuf and his PM to talk about the inefficiense of the so call president
so who will be the new guy? You know we have to impeach five president before
Somalia become united.maybe will be the next generation that will fix Somalia, children born
in America and Canada.
Gaadh-haye @ 2/17/2008 12:37 PM EST
In Ogaden, Ethiopian troops are conducting what they call counter insurgency by “burning villages, ra´ping women and killing civilians as part of a systematic campaign to drive them from their homes.”
“A former soldier who defected from the Ethiopian army said: ´he had been ordered to burn villages and kill all their inhabitants´. He added that before the army enters a village the “Ethiopian air force would bomb a village before a unit of ground troops followed, firing indiscriminately at civilians. ‘Men, women, children – we killed them all,’ he said.”

In Somalia, the Ethiopian troops are accused by human rights watch of “indiscriminate bombardment of populated neighborhoods” with deliberate intent to “blanket an entire area rather than hit specific military objects,” which according HR watch is an “evidence of a war crime”. In some instances they said “The shells were coming in a sustained format: each shell fell 40 meters from the other. In other areas, you would find 10 houses next to each other destroyed.”

The list can go on and on and on…. And they don’t describe it by its true name “genocide” and “crimes against humanity”. Instead they reward the perpetrators with a golden handshake: “The US provides some $283m (£140m) in military and humanitarian aid to Ethiopia and has trained its military – one of the largest and strongest in Africa.” While the Darfur crisis which is not in the scale of Somalia or Ogaden is hyped, exaggerated and “described by the US as ‘genocide’ and by the UN as ‘crimes against humanity’.”

 one more thing

the primeminster said today that he can get ethiopians leave within 24 hours
but he said what will be the replacement of the vacuum they cause
if you are smart enough and lived in the western then you know if there is no army no police that have the highest
descpline and training and also the equipment then we wouldnt be here as there is no law and order

so the so called condition of ''no talks as long ethiopians are there''will only fall on deaf ears
because the asmara group doesnt have any alternative plan in mind just like when they captured the south somalia
thats what we call ''if you fail to plan you planned to fail''

so as long there are no police and army from the somalis that are reliable, honest, well trained and hard working then ethiopians are more than welcome
to stay in our country that is even if there are peacekeepers from AU

awale81 @ 2/17/2008 12:03 PM EST
Alahu akbar markale ayaa lagu celinayaa mortorka barakaysan ,kadibna madxa ayuu kaga habsanayaa mujrim yuusufka shacabka dhiigiisii cabay. Aluhu akbar kuwada mujaahidiibtow, ugaarsiga mujrimiinta waa wayna Yusuf yeey, darwiish,Mahamed dheree iyo qaybdidd.
afuuf @ 2/17/2008 11:59 AM EST
wishing death for the president will not solve the problem of somalia
neither attack on public properties and killing innocent people with old unguided mortar machines from the soviet erra
will not bring a change in the somali government

As long one is defending his life and life of the civilans and their property, allah will assist them
dont they know that allah exist and he is the only one that take life and give life
this morrons have tried so many times that is daunting just to kill him

when the evil group pay their condolence to the innocent mothers and babies they massacred with their soviet mortars
then allah will guide them to their objectives if its islamicly permissable

hope they see the sign of god in their life as they are missing this.

salam
wabilahi towfiq

Now lets see if Those war-lords call Mr.Sudan al-shabab, put him a jail and ship him to addisababa just because he told Rauters the truth on the ground. I'd say to these so called international community and the UN, unless they do not target the root cause of the problem which is contain all those war-lords from the Somali Political arena things will never change. You will never sell Yosef and Co. in a good decent somali person. They have to go.
hararez @ 2/17/2008 9:12 AM EST
HERE WE GO AGAIN! The sneaky cowardly arrival of the ailing old warlord has been welcome by scary bombardment shells of the liberating forces. The message carried by the mortars is clear: Somalia is not a banana republic and you (Ina Yey) and your filthy fellow warlords (Darwish,Qeybdid,M.dhere,Dabaged) are doomed to failure.
adamjama @ 2/17/2008 9:06 AM EST
The International community is openly discussing genocide & war crimes. Yeey’s dimise is the last thing in anybody’s concern list. What they are finally realizing is the root causes of the anarchy & mayhem. Here is how the Article lists the factors that are fueling the fire:
1) “A local human rights group said on Saturday that nearly 292 civilians were killed and 385 wounded in Mogadishu last month alone“.
2) The chairman of the Elman Peace and Human Rights Organization, Sudan Ali Ahmed, estimated that 2 million Somalis had fled their homes in the capital since January 2007“.
3) The United Nations says Somalia is the world's most pressing humanitarian crisis.
4)"We can call what is happening in Somalia genocide. The international community ignores the human rights breaches in the country," Ahmed said by telephone.
Jawiil @ 2/17/2008 9:03 AM EST
Keep scaring the sh-i-t out of him.. he will atleast run out of diapers.
fiqicigaal @ 2/17/2008 8:28 AM EST
Never mind his death but what is disturbing and alarming is Mr Yusuf's egocentricity and his lust for power in a country that is devastated by war, drought and famine . Needless to say the presence of Ethiopian troops in somali soil who are his accomplice in genocide  will only bring more bloodshed and humanitarian catastrophy and that is painful
raamsade @ 2/17/2008 7:46 AM EST

Keep hitting.. Even if it doesnt hit him it'll scare his liver out and would be rushed to london soon. The Warlord has inflicted alot of injustices to the civilians on Somalia especially mogadishu and One day he will have to pay for that!!!
