NAIROBI (IRIN) - Fighting between Islamic insurgents and forces of the local administration in Somalia's port city of Kismayo entered a second day on 21 August, displacing hundreds of families, with dozens killed, sources told IRIN.

"Our estimate is that 3,000 families [18,000 people] were displaced by the fighting yesterday," Ali Bashi Abdullahi, the head of the Fanole Human Rights Organisation, said.

The fighting, between the Al-Shabab group and the forces of the local administration, was reported to be spreading to other parts of the city from its initial concentration in the neighbourhoods of Fanole, Isku filan and Farjano, in the north and northeast of the city, according to Abdullahi.

The latest fighting was mainly in the western neighbourhoods of Alanley and Via Afmadow, he said, causing hundreds of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Fanole to abandon their camps.

Abdullahi said more were still fleeing: "We don't have today's figures, but it looks like the 30,000 IDPs along with residents are on the move again."

He said most were fleeing to safer parts of the city, while others had sought refugee in the surrounding countryside.

"Some of these people are being displaced for the second or third time," said Abdullahi.

At least 29 people have reportedly died since the fighting began on 20 August, while over 80 were injured, he added.

Ali Hassan, a doctor at the Kismayo General Hospital, said dozens of injured were brought into the hospital.

"We have received 50 people injured in the fighting since this morning [21 August]," said Hassan, adding that the injured included both combatants and civilians.

"These are the numbers of the people who made it to the hospital," he said.

Kismayo is 500km south of the capital Mogadishu and has been suffering from persistent insecurity.

According to other sources, tension had been building between the two groups over who should administer the city.

"It just boiled over yesterday [Wednesday]," said a source.

Later, the source said the fighting appeared to have died down. "It seems that the Al Shabab group has been pushed back."

Abdullahi appealed to both sides to spare the civilian population and to stop using heavy weapons in populated areas.

He also called on international aid agencies to urgently assist the displaced.

Meanwhile, violence continued in Mogadishu as combined Ethiopian and government troops battled insurgents on 21 August.

The fighting occurred mostly in the north of the city, according to a local source. Hospital sources said at least "four foreign troops and 10 Somalis were killed on Wednesday".

Since fighting between Ethiopian-backed Somali forces and insurgents began in early 2007, about one million Somalis have fled their homes. Some 8,000 civilians have been killed.

The UN estimates that 2.6 million Somalis need assistance. That number is expected to reach 3.5 million by the end of the year if the humanitarian situation does not improve.

 Legend,
First the comment wasn't meant for you. Please follow all the commentators before jumping to that conclusion. I don't mix Islam and Somali politics, but our sister Aisha1 has been on the religious side of this debate. For her to venture into 'Affare Qabil business" perhaps its her true colors are shining.

What a hypocrisy to read individuals like shanta to write comments like the following one "Aisha1 you disappoint me! I thought you were good Muslim who didn’t care about this clan business? the dude chats like his comments were never clan based.

Are we heading back to the civil war era. There are no Ethiopians in Kismayo and its is againt the TFG, so what is the point of faighing over it.

Latest news: Kismayo is in the hands of the resistance. Warlord militias are surrendering in their numbers.

This time please don't spare Huuraale. If you capture him, decapitate him.

It's wrong for a clan from as far as Gedo and that forcefully occupied Kismaayo, to fight and die for it.
Kismaayo is a Somali city and should remain that way.

shanta @ 8/21/2008 7:18 PM EST
I wonder why all the wars waged, the epicenter is the South? When the so-called Amharo lovers live across the street from you in Galkayo, and their capital Garowe is not far from Galkayo.  Reer Mudug strategy doesn’t make any sense to battle over a parcel of land that doesn’t belong to them- they should understand that in the south people have lived in a respectful manner based on community shared responsibility.  Reer Mudug can now wear the religious clothes, but they ought to know that the clothes do not make the man.

Warkii u dambeyey ee Kismayo, Barre Hiiraale ayaa gacan sareeya.

Wararka dagaalka helitaankooda oo aad u adag, ayaa haddana la tilmaamaya in al-shabaab laga adkaaday oo ay firxad bilaabeen badankoodana, una si carareen xagaas iyo xeebta, lana sheegay in lagu sii baacsanayo oo dhimasho iyo dhaawac soo gaaray, laakiin sida la sheegayo maleeshiyo gurmad ah ayaa la filaya iney ka yimaadaan xarunta lug-low ee degmada goobweyn u dhaw oo ay saldhig u tahay maleeshiyo maxkamadaha.  XamarWayne;
If it comes down sparing one; the puppet and his owner; I would rather save the owner because he has the final word. In other words, Huuraale and his ilk are worse than the Ethiopians and need to be cleansed. Huuraale destroyed what was once the most beautiful region in Somalia by cutting the trees for profit. I think the freedom fighters need to put their emphasis on these kind of marionettes first before fighting the bigger enemy. We need to get Huuraale and his ilk out of Kismaayo and send them to where they came from; the villages like Wasmo-Xun.
anti-dabadhlifs @ 8/21/2008 4:01 PM EST
xamarweyn you right there are no ethopians in kismaayo but there are his workers and dabodhilifs in kesmaayo like bare hiirale. Ethopian dont need to send every  town in Somalia if  he can get dabodhilifs like bare hiiraale to do his job. Bare hiiraale was trying to create jubeland. Do you think that is his own idea?. This idea came from the invaders and they are the one created puntland, somaliland now jubeland.
xamarweyne @ 8/21/2008 3:43 PM EST
It is reported that the fighting in Kismaya is between the administration of the city led by warlord and insurgency group led by alshabab. Alshabab is seems to be pushed back as reported. The reason for this new fighting is that for insurgence to show that the agreement reached in Dijibouti does not effect them or they do not recognize it. They also want to attack anywhere they think that they can take over the control of that city.

Alshabab, in one hand, they are saying they will fight with Ethiopian troop while they continously originating fighting such places like Kismayu where there is no Ethiopan troops. The problem of Somalia is not only Ethipian troop's invention as most of the poeple claim. Yeah, no somali person, except few, would prefer Ethiopian troops to be in somalia, but remember, somalia has been fight among them for last 17 years and went through 14 different negotiation and there is no peace. Ethopian only arrived last year. I am not saying they are not adding fuel to somali's problem, but there is bigger problem that need to be solved among somalis.

It seems that everyone who fight last to take over city or fighting existing administration becomes automaticly alshabab, where earlier, it used to be reported as two warlord fighting for the control of the one city. Shielkh Aweys is enjoying all these fighting becuase he claims that those fighting in Somalia are alshabab and they are fighting against ethiopian. Now what will he say in his next interview.
Lamadage @ 8/21/2008 3:30 PM EST
I'm back after I was arrested and to*tu*ed for the last two weeks in the hand of Amhara lovers and Abyssinians. Thank to Allah then elders in Mogadishu who work hard for my release.

For Kismaayo mooryaans, you better know the sayf of Islam will get you if you don't lay down your weapon and follow the suit.

Sahalsiidi: He is not the only man. Indhocade & Co and his gang are form Mudug as well. They control Merca, Brava, Jilib , Jamaame all the fertile agricultural areas have been occupied by reer Mudug. The Difference being that, Barre Hiraale doesn't hide behind our holy book and religion, whereas the Indhocade & Co are pretending to be fighting for Islam.

The fundamental root causes of our instability & anarchy (war lord & Ethiopia)are ironically pretending to also be the solution of our problem as a Government & peace keepers. Mark my word, there will never be peace & stability in Somalia as long as there are War lords + Ethiopia calling the shots. We are being entertained with one reconciliation scheme after another & it is not taking us anywhere. In June, the allegedly opposing parties signed in Djibouti this agreement "The ARS and the Somali Prime Minister Nur Hassan Hussein had inked an initial accord in early June in Djibouti, calling for the termination of all acts of armed confrontation for a period of 90 days. The agreement also called on the United Nations to facilitate the withdrawal of Ethiopian forces by deploying its peacekeepers to Somalia". Source: PressTV, August 19, 2008. Pay attention here, within 90 days violence will stop & Ethiopia will leave, how wishful thinking indeed. As a matter of fact violence is spreading like a wild fire in all of Southern Somalia. I don't know what is magic the number "90" because Geedi declared a 90 day Marshall Law in which time he promised peace & prosperity. Then they had that 90 day artificial reconciliation meeting in Mogadishu where they gathered 700 delegates from their daily chores with the promise of $50/day/delegate if they sign peace pact when they were not even in conflict. In all those schemes, war lords made themselves at least $40 Million per attempt, not bad. You can entertain the International donors but you can never trick the millions of Somalis suffering everywhere because of war lords with Ethiopian support from 1991 & before.

Hiiraale and his gangs are against the freedom fighters
of Somalia, just because he wants to enrich himself at
the expenses of Somali people. He leased Jubba grounds
to European companies so they can bury their waste.
It is time this tug to go once and for all. Remember
in his hay day, when he was the so called minister of
defense and his interview? At that time he thought he
was a winner and he would live happily after. Tell this
tug, no more TFG for you and no more Kismayo either.
And, by the way, he said yesterday he represent this
city at the TFG,,it is amazing is he really that
delusional?
