LONDON A new website, Somali Gay Community, has been launched to serve the small gay Somali community in London – and beyond.

It is believed to be the first of its kind in Somali history and culture anywhere in the world.

“Somalia is an Islamic country and, as they think that homosexuality is a Western illness, we do not exist in their eyes,” said Muraad, one of the Somali gays in London behind the website.

Muraad is the name used within the London gay Somali community.

“Though we live in the West, we still fear of our families and what the Somali community in general could do to us.”

“What our people think about us is one thing, but the thing that matters us the most is finding a way of helping and supporting each other through the most difficult times of our lives,” he said.

When the website became a reality seven days ago, it was a dream come true.  And the dream started eight years ago.

That was when Muraad first ‘came out’ to his best friend – also a Somali.

“After a long discussion I told him that I will do something about making information available to all other gay Somalis,” he recalled.

“His reaction was that ‘you will only bring shame to your family [Muraad] – and by the way, how can you help others if you are in trouble yourself for doing something that is against our religion and culture’.

“At the time, if I knew that I was not ill and that I was not the only Somali gay person in the world, I would not have had suffered so much,” he said.

“For us – and I mean Somali gays, there are no gay role models to look up to and to identify yourself as gay, or Khaniis, which in Somali is a very bad insult.  It is very hard,” he admitted.

The website itself was two years in the making.

“Our aim is to reach out those who need us the most and help them,” Muraad continued.

“I am so proud to have found my mates.  Their dedication and courageous efforts have made this project what it is now.

“Of course we fear the consequence, though in different degrees.

“But that will not stop us,” he insisted.

The Somali Gay Community website, which is still in its early development, is in English and Somali.

Already it contains helpful information for gay Somalis, ranging from health matters to support services.

There is an interesting page on “Homosexuality in Islam” and a message board where members can interact, supporting each other.  Membership is free.

Brief Somali language welcome

Ku soo dhawow bulshadayada

Hadaad tahay qof khaniis ah waxa daruuri ah in aad fahantid ka sokow halganka aynu la kulano markaynu is aqabalayno nafsi ahaanteena iyo ta bulshada dhexdeedaba, in ay ugu muhiimsan tahay inaynu garawsano in aynaan kelideen ahayn iyo in ay jirto bulsho weyn oo khaniisiin ah taas oo qof ka heli karo nidaamyo badan oo caawimo iyo aqbalaad leh.

Dad badan baa u arka galmada waxa ugu badan ee macna weyn leh aragtida khaniisnimada. Tani kaliya maaha ta keliya ee dhaqanka ku dhegan laakiin sidoo kale waa eray gaf ku ah dadka qaar. Iyada oon si khalada ahayn, bulshada khaniisiinta dhexdeeda, galmadu waa waxa ugu fudud ee sahalka lagu helo laakiin jacayl ka dhexeeya laba nin ama laba naagood waa mid sidoo kale si caadi ah looga helo. Tan oo ay ku jiraan isku xirnaansho jir iyo qiiro leh oo heersare ah.

Jacaylka iyo isjiidashada labo nin dhexmartaa waa wax caalami ah oo la cadeeyay bilaw ilaa dhamaad taariikhda dhaqamo badan oo kala duwan. Khaniisnimadu maaha caado xun oon la sheegi karin xumaan darteed ama hab nololeed uu qof soo qaadan karo markuu ku noolaado galbeedka sida aynu inagu badankeenu ka maqalay reerkeena, asxaabteen ama bulshadeena oo leh.

Saaxiibtinimada Khaniisiinta dhexdeeda waxa weeye mid sidoo kale muhiim ah maadama xaaladaha badankood ay inoo noqdaan qoyskeena labaad. Dadka qaarkood inba inka badan bay isku haleeyaan marka laga gooyo qoysaska dhaqameed.

Markaad tahay wiil khaniis dhalin yar ama gabadh khaniisad dhalin yar oo Soomaali ah, in aad banaanka u soo baxdid waa dhacdo laga cabsado in la sameeyo maadama ay ku lug leedahay in aad heshiisiisid diinteena iyo dhaqankeena kuwaas oo sida badan ka soo horjeeda khaniisnimada.

Hasa yeeshee waxaa jira laba nooc oo banaan usoo bixis ah: banaan usoo bixista uu qofku naftiisa isku soo banaan baxo iyo mid uu u soo banaan baxo dadweynaha. Ta aadka u mihiimka ah labada waa isku soo banaan bixista shaqsi ahaaneed, aqbashidna in aad adigu soo jiidatid kuwa aad isku jinsiga tihiin iyo inay yihiin dareemo dabiici ah ood ku dhalaty kuwaas oon la karin in la bedelo iyo iyada oo aan macnahu ahayn in aad adigu qof kale u sheegto wax galmadaada ku saabsan.

Intaa waxaa sii dheer, is aqablaadani daruuri ahaan macnaheedu maahan in aad adigu ka takto ama dayac tirto qaabyada kale ee shaqsi ahaantaada ka mid ah kuwaas oo ay ka mid yihiin dhaqanka, diinta ama ta badanaa ugu muhiimsan shaqsi ahaantaada intaad kadaba ordaysid waxaad adigu u malaynaysid waxa khaniis ama khaniisadi ahaan lahaayeen.

Ahaw qofkaad adigu tahay! Waa dareen xornimo leh in aad hab siisid qaab kasta oo shaqsiyadaada ah halkii aad ku nolaan lahayd inkiraad iyo murugaysnaan.

I don't think we need to respond to GAYS since we don't share the same values and culture. Allah created men & women for each other & not the dirty vice versa. Many non-believers such as Christians and Jews believe it is a sin to be a GAY where as VERY few IGNORAN*T SOMALIS THINK IT IS OKAY.

HOL WHO MOST OF US THOUGHT WERE EDUCATED ARE FOR THE WRONG REASONS [PROMOTING THIS EVIL*].

 Poem
We are proud gay brothers and sisters. We know religion and we are tolerant.

We are thick skinned and keep harm at bay.
We are bringing back up our name that you have attacked and dragged in the mud.
We are speaking for a people that you have oppressed.
We will claim our rights through debate and  knowledge.
Those who welcome and want to debate with us, we will welcome  them.

And those who fear us, we will make them jump further.......

I conclude with these words: a GAY is a GAY.
This is a big name of great  value.
It is for he who is your brother and shares your name, so give him  his due.
Throughout the world, we come in white, black and green.
Our  numbers approximate a billion.
Our struggle is greater than ever and in  parts of the world, we come first in the constitution.
Oscar Wilde has lit  the way for us and we are far from taboo.
Somalis, do not even try anything,  as you will fall behind the rest of the word.
I deliver my message with  welcoming words and a healthy debate.

Madaxeey, are you telling me that there was no gays in Somalia and this is new phenomena found in the western culture. I haven't forced you to adapt any culture, it is up to you how you want to conduct your life be gay or straight.

In terms Marxuumada siinka dheer lagu dilay, maxaa siinka loogu sugay, laakin aan loogu dilin gurigeeda ama xafiiskeeda ayadoo ka soo baxeysa, sniperka itoobiyanka ah ama dowlada maxuu ula sugaayo intaas asagoo Xamar ku qaarajin kara. Waad ogtahay nimankii caruuraha iyo islaamah hoos harsada inay yihiin kuwa dilay, intay quudinaysay isla ayaga.
madaxeey @ 11/20/2007 11:14 AM EST
Aarrawelo it is sad that you have to speculate who killed Madina. But in reality we know the TFG and the Ethiopian army is the obstacle for the distribution of aid to the misplaced civilians. We also know who the snipers are. If you have to speculate about Madina’s death back it up with concrete facts not fiction.  No need for name calling attack the issue not my upbringing. Whether you like or dislike gays “tas waa mid adiga ku taal” but don’t try to force us this adapted western culture of yours. Madina (Alaha u naxariste) was a true feminist; even she would have said “acudi billahi” if she had heard that there are Somali gay community.  You should follow her steps and fight the Ethiopian enemy by any means necessary. I can’t believe anyone with conscious would come to the defense of this totalitarian Ethiopian regime. Word of advice keep your culture and love your people.

 Attention to Somalis:

HOL should never have posted such a disgusted article about homo. I call to all my fellow Somalis to boycot HOL since they make money from the visitors for many of the articles we click they collect money. I know many people who open websites just to make money on advertisement. Even if HOL removes this article today, that shouldn't change our propspective on them since all the damage has been done already. They have successfully promoted this disgusted group whether they making money from this group or whether they don't care or members of the HOL belonging to this group.

The fact that they haven't voiced their opinion in this matter tells me they support this group.. May Allah guide us all to the true path..

AKH! The article is still there. Who cares what we say? HOL proves typical Somalis with "maxaa ka micnaa" mindset. Watch out for they may put the article in the left/right banners. All Somali Ulimas, please condemn HOL in your Friday Khutbas and warn our community about westernising and eliminating our ISLAMIC values.

This is my second time I'm trying to write my opinion and it doesn't show up why I really can not say but I hope this will. First of all let me say to those of you who are demanding this article to be removed should be a shamed for your shamfull suport of what is going on in our homeland Somalia and not demanding it should be stoped and infact some of you gave justification for the senseless killing of inocent women and children and now you are demanding inocent article to be removed because it is worst than taking human life!! It is really upsite-down mentality and I hope you will stop that nonsence! Because your writing convey no intelligible ideas and it is absurd. Some of you claimed talking to a mullah and he said it is a sin to publish such an article...I say that is nonsence because ask him what is he doing in UK why not move to Saudi Arebia where his sick idea would be ok why is he living with a Nation that is ok with Gays ..I suggest you should ask him that question. Finally I like to say this to you all as it was said before that one can have his/her opinion but not his/her fact and the fact is that there are Somali Gays and we as Somalis should welcome this fact and let them live in peace. I for one say congrat to all Somali Gays and Lesbian and surely I will teach my children to respect you and I will be leading by example for them by saying I have great respect for those Somalis who are Gays and Lesbians.
Nuurbiid @ 11/19/2007 5:23 PM EST
