Somali PM to meet Islamist financier in Djibouti

MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Somali Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi will meet Abukar Omar Adan, a top financial backer of the ousted Islamic Courts movement, on Friday in Djibouti to encourage its fighters to accept a government amnesty.

The move came a day after a fugitive leader of the hardline movement made his first public appearance, after months on the run, at a conference of Somali opposition figures in Eritrea.

"The talks have been organized by Djibouti officials and are anticipated to unite Islamists who are going to take advantage of the government's amnesty," Gedi's spokesman Musse Kulow said.

Gedi's interim government is struggling to impose its authority on the Horn of Africa nation, which has been in chaos since warlords overthrew dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991.

The appearance of Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys, who some believe is behind an anti-government insurgency in Mogadishu, at the meeting in Asmara came a week after Gedi's administration ended its own reconciliation conference in the Somali capital.

Kulow said the prime minister's talks in Djibouti with Adan, a 72-year-old Somali businessman, would be friendly.

"It is a family negotiation because Adan hails from the same sub-clan as Gedi," Kulow told Reuters. "After the talks, it is expected ... (he) will return to Mogadishu with him."

Adan surrendered to the authorities in neighboring Kenya after Somali interim government troops backed by the Ethiopian military routed the Islamists from Mogadishu over the New Year.

He admitted being in Kenya illegally, but in February an immigration case against him was dropped without explanation.

At the conference in Eritrea, another Islamist leader -- Sheikh Sharif Ahmed -- called on the United States to engage with the Somali opposition, and rejected charges of terrorism against the Courts that he said had been fabricated by Ethiopia.

Mark Schroeder, Africa analyst with U.S.-based intelligence consultancy Stratfor, said there seemed little common ground.

"Neither side in the Somali conflict ... is willing to compromise at this point," Schroeder said in a statement.

The Somali uprising has just started. my hut is off for the people Heliwaa, the Duduble and the Saruur who have shown they are the real masters of the jungle when it comes to patriotism. History will remember you and we the rest of the Somali people will remember you. You have became a roll-model and others will have to learn from you. Thank you

Dr Ali or should I say Dr. Do Little

What a disappointing doctor you are, I feel sorry that a person who calls himself such a title vomits like you do. If the facts and reality in Somalia are giving you insomnia, do not resort to clanish nonsense cause we all have been there and done that. Dottore, It is over no more clan occupation and no more criminal minded individuals who running our lifes. Our Prime Minister Gedi is doing political milestone and he is trying to disengage in house political malfunction. ICU is another reflection of our clanish dirt, they can't safe Somalia and you know what Somalia needs to be put out of harm's way from their likes.

Gedi is dependent on Ethiopia and he cannot make any decisions without his Tigrean puppeteers, the same is true for warlord Abdulahi yusuf. The view point of the UIC is clear and that is first to liberate the country and then it is possible for Somalis to discuss their affairs. Although I have high regard for Haji Adani and his opinion about the occupation he remains one individual. The Union of Islmaic courts in particular and the wider Somali public both are determined to free our country. Some warlord apologists think that the colonial occupation is helping their clan but they will end up crying soon. The conflict that the warlords are creating will first engulf their clansmen. Somali people must not fall into the trap of the warlords and the colonial forces and remain united.

You can write long comments , recite poems or even foul mouth to those who have different views than your rigid and radicle mind set to the current somali politics but you can not change the reality on the ground unless you prepared to take risk and play the right card AT THIS TIME which will allow you to weasle your way with diplomacy and tolerance. This is a mile stone for Mr Geedi to bring back a big fish from a sea of bewildered self claimed politicians and former islamists who abandoned their followers in the middle of a war they started foolishly wthout a plan and agenda
