Ethiopia: Chinese Oil Company Refuses to Resume Operation in Ogaden

Sunday, December 09, 2007

Addis Ababa (Angola Press) - The Chinese Oil Company, Zhoungyan Petroleum Exploration Bureau (ZPEB), has refused to resume work on oil exploration projects in the Ogaden basin.

Contracted by the Malaysian oil and gas company, Petronas and South-West Energy, a company licensed in Hong Kong, ZPEB has been conducting seismic survey in the Ogaden region of the Somali Regional State. After the Ogaden National Liberation Front`s (ONLF) attack on the Abole exploration site in the Degehabur zone last April, ZPEB suspended operation. Seventy-four civilians, including nine Chinese workers, were killed in the attack.

The Ethiopian Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) demanded the petroleum companies to start work on the exploration projects. However, ZPEB refused to return its oil workers to the Ogaden region. Senior officials of the MME told The Reporter that the parent company of ZPEB, Sino Tech, did not allow it to resume the operation.

Petronas is now in the process to hire an Iranian Company called Oil Exploration Operation Company, (OEOC). Representatives of Petronas and OEOC last week visited the Ogaden region. The representatives conferred with officials of the MME on the oil exploration projects in the Ogaden.

"OEOC`s response to Petrona`s request was positive.

However, they did not yet sign a contractual agreement," officials of MME told The Reporter. OEOC is engaged in oil exploration projects in Iran and Uzbekistan. Petronas is also engaged in a similar project in Uzbekistan.

Meanwhile, the Swedish petroleum company, Lundin, recently began to conduct gravity survey in its exploration area in the Ogaden basin. Lundin has four exploration blocks in the Ogaden. Two weeks ago the company launched its airborne survey in the exploration blocks found near Dire Dawa town.

Pexco, another Malaysian company, is also prepared to begin gravity survey next month.

Pexco has two exploration blocks in the Ogaden.

"All the companies which have exploration blocks want to commence work. But they need sometime to find a subcontractor," officials of MME said.

Thanks to all of you true somalis who have shown their concern for ogaden, it's people  and it's wealth. As for curad . in my book he just a weird creature who is craving for attention and we shoudn't be bothered to respond to his cheap and childish comments. Viva ONLF !! victory to the people of ogaden regardless of their ethnicity. Woe betide to the enemy!!!!!!!!

I'm always finding it hard to grasp when I hear some people claiming to be Somalians yet so full of Support for Melez's brutal regime, do these people have any blood left in their vains, shame on them.  To be frank I'm not even sure if this people are Somalians.  Just remember those of you who may not had followed history, these companies and their sponsoring governments look ahead 50 to 100 years for places that are strategic economically, and geographically, why do you think these foreign involvements are endless, because they all fighting to grab our wealth, which is yet to be explored.

Curad(ama DICIS!) I AM WESTERN SOMALIAN, NOT ANY CIRIIN CUNEE. Buquul Farda Lamirtaa barkood ayu ismoodaa. Even though you are on their pay list, you are a just Somali for the Ethios. Concerning history, Haile Salasse prevented international aid worker to reach there when 500,000 Somalis starved to death in 1974, but left 5 billion US dollars in Swiss banks. Meles Zenawi deported aid workers out of the same Somali region year 2007, oh what a short memory in your short-circuited little brain!

Gacaliye@ @ 12/9/2007 4:40 PM EST
These foreign companies must be reminded that they are in OCCUPIED WESTERN SOMALIA ON THEIR OWN Risk! We Somalis do not see any difference between the black colonialists and the foreign companies helping  them to steal our natural resourses!
@ 12/9/2007 3:33 PM EST
The best achievements I ever heard from ONLF, keep doing such
this potential war against enemy. I also appreciated for Chines

lula @ 12/9/2007 1:15 PM EST
Today Bule Burte is free and tomorrow is Mogadishu and the rest of the country.
Somali freedom fighters are working around the clock, as my friend was telling me they
build Agal in front of the White house with Somali flag to protest against this ill
occupation. Let the freedom ring, God bless our freedom fighters in here
and all over the country.
Ubax-08 @ 12/9/2007 1:08 PM EST

Well done ONLF, oil company are nothing but thefts, they shall wait

not one that is ejected by Meles.

Colhaye @ 12/9/2007 12:14 PM EST
Well done ONLF! Remember that you carry the reputation and dignity of an entire nation! Bravo boys and girls! This is a Somali land and should only benefit the Somalis. We don't want our revenues used to pay schools and universities in Maqale, Tigree.
kabridahar @ 12/9/2007 10:27 AM EST
well done ONLF! no company should feel save to steal our natural resources. great job Onlf. save gaurd our resources. these resources belong to somali people in this region and whole somali speaking people in the horn of Africa in general.
viva ONLF and all somali freedom fighters.Ethiopia took our land by gun, not by asking us and we should take our land back by gun. and believe me it will happen soon.
yaa is gaaray @ 12/9/2007 10:12 AM EST
Great job ONLF. Those traitors dont like the name ONLF, but they dont have problem with when axmaaro taking their oil and resources?Civilians dont receive one cent of their oil money. Axmaarada millions markee  oil ka helaan  hub beey ku soo iibsadaan hubkana shacabka ogadenia beey ku dhameeyaan.
nomadic1 @ 12/9/2007 9:54 AM EST
No exploitation of Ogeden's natural resources by it's tormentors. Stay away until the people of this Somali region are in a position to determine and manage their resources. Well done to ONLF for  sending such a strong message.
Fiqicigaal @ 12/9/2007 9:50 AM EST
There will be no peace in ogaden for oil companies and Ethiopia to exploit our oil and other mineral resources . Let it be known to any oil company that they will risk their lifes if they resume to conduct survey in ogaden and they know what has happened to those poor chinese workers who paid the ultimate price when they ignored the ONLF warnings
M J Ali @ 12/9/2007 8:48 AM EST
Somali region in Ethiopia should be benefited by Somali, not by Meles who was contracted for war and killing by America.

Meanwhile, I should say " good of Chinese Oil Company for refusing to carry on oil exploration in somali region in Ethiopia."
Gaadh-haye @ 12/9/2007 7:57 AM EST
This a good example for those who will come after the Chinese.

Dont be tempted, I say to whosoever wants to invest in a virtual war-zone. Otherwise, if you desist from the advice and warning given to you by ONLF, then you do so at your peril.

The land belongs to us. We have the finnal say, not Addis ababa.
