Nairobi (HOL)  — Sir Mo Farah, the celebrated Somali-British distance runner will visit Kenya from April 21 to 23 as the first Global Goodwill Ambassador for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) – UN Migration. During his visit, Farah will inaugurate a digital library at the Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA) and participate in the Mo Farah Cup, an annual football tournament engaging over 200 urban migrants.

According to the IOM, the four-time Olympic gold medalist and six-time world champion will engage with migrants, local authorities, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to increase awareness of the difficulties migrants face in the country.

Farah's visit is compelling, given his own history as a survivor of human trafficking. He intends to advocate for the rights and aspirations of migrants throughout his stay, underscoring a personal commitment to change and support for those in similar plights.

Upon retiring from competitive running in September at age 40, Farah, who was trafficked from Somalia to the UK as a child, has been vocal about his experiences and the broader issue of child trafficking. "No child should ever endure what I went through. Child trafficking victims are just that—children who deserve the chance to enjoy their childhood," Farah said.

"Migration affects us all profoundly. I seized the opportunity that sport provided to transcend my early hardships and demonstrate that, irrespective of one's background, success is attainable," he said during his appointment in November.

IOM Director General Amy Pope has praised Farah's dedication and influence: "Sir Mo Farah, a champion on and off the track and a survivor of human trafficking, brings unwavering dedication and drive to IOM's mission. His role as our first global Goodwill Ambassador underscores IOM's commitment to effective advocacy and support for millions on the move."
